Brief Introduction
Shanghai Science and Technology Museum is a comprehensive natural science and technology museum with Chinese characteristics, times characteristics, and Shanghai 上海 characteristics invested by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government to implement the strategy of revitalizing the country through science and education, improve the city’s comprehensive competitiveness and citizens’ scientific and cultural literacy. It is a public welfare institution that conducts popular science education for the public and is an important base for popular science education and spiritual civilization construction in China.
The Science and Technology Museum is located at No. 2000, Century Avenue, Pudong New Area 浦东新区, Shanghai, China. The main hall covers an area of more than 68000 square meters, with a building area of 98000 square meters. It is divided into 11 theme exhibition areas with different styles, 4 high-tech special cinemas, 3 art galleries of ancient and modern Chinese and foreign scientists and their footprints, 2 theme exhibitions, and several temporary exhibition halls. Together, they vividly interpret the eternal topic of “nature, people, science, and technology” for tourists from all quarters.
The main hall of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum was officially opened to the public on December 18, 2001. It is the first science and technology museum in China that has passed the ISO9000/14000 international quality/environmental standard certification and has become a national AAAAA science popularization tourist attraction.

Cinemas
The screen of the giant screen cinema 巨幕影院 is huge, 18.3m high and 24.3m wide (equivalent to the height of a 6-story building), and can accommodate 441 audiences. The projection equipment of the stereoscopic giant screen cinema adopts a 70 mm 15-hole IMAX dual projector system. The frame of the 70 mm 15-hole film it uses is 10 times that of the ordinary 35 mm film.
When the stereoscopic film is shown, the huge picture six floors high makes the audience have a strong shock, and there is a 6+1 channel sound system in the cinema, which can broadcast music and special sound through more than ten groups of speakers at the same time.
IMAX Spherical Screen Cinema 球幕影院 of Shanghai Science and Technology Museum is a novel film and television venue with dual functions of spherical screen film and celestial phenomena demonstration, integrating education and entertainment. The diameter of the screen is 23 meters and the gradient is 30 degrees. The inclined screen can make the audience feel floating in the air. It can accommodate 280 spectators.
The 4D Cinema is a Disney concept cinema, which can accommodate 56 audiences. It is a combination of three-dimensional movies and one-dimensional environmental effects. During the screening, the environmental mechanisms such as water sprinkling, water spraying, hair blowing, smoke, and seat sinking in the cinema change with the story of the film, so that the audience can feel the rain, sea water splashing, falling into a trap, crabs biting their legs and other phenomena, completely integrating the audience with the film.
The Space Cinema 太空影院 of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum is the first multimedia ball screen cinema in China that uses video splicing, image processing, audience interaction, computer-integration, and other technologies. Digistar3 system has 6 video projectors, and the lighting power reaches 4800 watts. Under the control of a computer, they transmitted six connected images on a spherical screen 13 meters in diameter, forming a complete global screen image.
There are 69 seats in the whole theater, and the inclination of the seats reaches 23 degrees. The audience almost lies down to watch the movie. The most novel thing is that there is a control button on the armrest of each seat. The audience can press this button to control the development of the movie plot, reaching the realm of “painting moves with people, and people think with painting”.
Architectures
The building of Shanghai Science and Technology Museum consists of one underground floor, four ground floors, and an office complex. The whole building shows a spiral rising form, which represents the continuous progress of science and technology. In the middle of the building is a huge landmark glass sphere, embedded in a pool of clear water, which symbolizes the birth of life.
The first underground floor is the public area with the most concentrated service facilities in the museum, with a ticket lobby, food court, leisure corridor, and temporary exhibition hall. Also in this area.
The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum has a special venue for foreign exhibitions. The venue is located on the B1 floor of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, with an area of about 1200 square meters. The water and electricity supply is complete. The exhibition area has a special channel and ticket sales point.
