I. About Southern Medical University
Southern Medical University, formerly known as the First Military Medical University of the People’s Liberation Army of China, was founded in 1951 and was designated as a national key university in 1979. In August 2004, it was transferred to Guangdong Province and renamed Southern Medical University.
It currently has two campuses in Guangzhou and Shunde.
The school is the only medical institution among the first five key construction universities of provincial high-level universities in Guangdong Province. It is also one of the first batch of medical universities jointly established by various departments and provinces in China. It is also one of the first eight universities to offer an eight year clinical medicine major (undergraduate and doctoral programs), and one of the first batch of pilot universities for the education and training program for outstanding doctors and outstanding doctors (traditional Chinese medicine) in China.
The school has been selected for three consecutive years in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 500, and in 2023, it was ranked among the top 400 global universities.
II. Admission Guide of Southern Medical University: Admission Requirements
1. Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens holding a valid foreign passport.
If both parents or one of the parents of the applicant are Chinese citizens and reside in a foreign country, the applicant should have foreign nationality at birth and hold a valid foreign passport or nationality certificate for at least 4 years.
In addition, a record of more than 2 years of actual residence in a foreign country in the last 4 years (by April 30, 2024) is also needed.
For people immigrating from Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan to foreign countries and are applying as international students, please refer to the requirements above.
2. Applicants should be physically and mentally healthy, and meet the medical examination standards for applying for a study visa or residence permit in China.
3. Applicants should be 18-30 years old with a high school diploma or above.
4. Applicants should be friendly to China, with excellent grades and good conduct, without any record of violation of school rules and regulations, nor any record of public security punishment or criminal record.
5. Applicant’s language proficiency must meet the following requirements:
(1). Basic understanding of Chinese. Applicants should provide the certificate of basic Chinese learning, such as training certificate, HSK certificate, etc. Those without any Chinese language background must attend the Chinese training organized by the University before the enrollment;
(2). Applicants from non-English-speaking countries must reach a score above 80 in TOEFL (15 or above for each item) or 6.0 in IELTS (5.5 or above for each item); or provide other comparable certificates proving English proficiency. Applicants from English-speaking countries or receiving the last degree with the instruction in English are exempt from submitting the English proficiency certificates, but the certificate of English medium issued by the school graduated from shall be provided.
III. Majors
1. MBBS
Southern Medical University is qualified to admit Clinical Medicine international undergraduate students (English medium) announced by the Ministry of Education of China. Since September 2005, SMU has admitted more than 1,700 students from over 50 countries including India, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Pakistan, Thailand, Jordan, Kenya, Somalia, Iran, Zambia, United States, United Kingdom, South Korea.
Referring to the international standards for medical education, and the Quality Control Specification of Medical Undergraduate Education for International Students in China (English Medium) (Trial), the program is carried out while giving due consideration to the medical needs of international students’ source countries and the international needs of returning to home country or serving in a third country.
The major aims at training international medical talents with solid basic knowledge, proficient clinical skills and good professional ethics, and devotes to providing medical, teaching and research personnel to medical and health services department.
The main courses include Human Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Immunology, Medical Diagnostics, Medical Psychology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Epidemiology, etc..
The duration of study is 6 years including one year of internship in hospitals. International students will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in English.
2. BDS
The major aims to cultivate high-quality dental professionals who master the basic knowledge, theories and skills of basic medicine and clinical medicine, have professional knowledge and skills of dentistry, and are capable of diagnosis and treatment of common dental diseases.
The main courses include Introduction of Dentistry, Dental Biology, Dental Anatomy and Physiology, Dental Histopathology, Imaging Diagnosis of Dental and Maxillofacial Medicine, Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery, Operative Dentistry and Endodontics, Periodontal Disease, Dental Mucosal Diseases, Pediatric Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Preventive Dentistry, Dental Materials Science, Geriatric Dentistry, Dental Equipment, etc..
The duration of study is 6 years including one year of internship. International students will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS).

1. Scanned copy of valid passport’s information page;
2. Scanned copy of Highest Academic Degree Certificate, Expected Graduation Certificate for fresh graduates (original one and English-translated one. After being pre-admitted, applicants are required to submit final Graduation Certificate to be eligible for official admission.);
3. Scanned copies of transcript of all courses during the highest academic degree education (original one and English-translated one);
4. ID photo (2-inch blue background photo without hats);
5. Scanned copy of Foreigner’s Physical Examination Form completed in Chinese or English;
6. English self-introduction video (3-5 minutes, no more than 50M);
7. Certificate of Language proficiency;
8. Financial Support Guarantee Statement and scanned copies of its supporting documents completed in Chinese or English, certifying that the applicant has sufficient funds to cover his or her tuition, accommodation, living expenses and international travels during his or her study in China. The minimum amount of funding required is RMB 150,000. Only one’s relatives can act as his or her financial sponsor.
The statement should be accompanied by a scanned copy of the financial sponsor’s valid passport or identification certificate (self-supporting applicants should submit this statement);
9. Original Authorization to the Guardian (for self-supporting applicants under the age of 18 by September 1, 2024) needs to be notarized with signatures. If not notarized in China, the endorsement of local Chinese Embassy is required.
★ Guardians shall be Chinese or foreign adults who reside in China with stable source of income.
★ Graduation certificate and transcript should be notarized.
★ The University will request for supplementary materials when necessary.
★ Application materials mentioned above will not be returned to applicants whether they are admitted or not.

VII. Review and Admission
The University will review the completeness and authenticity of the applicant’s materials, and organize entrance examination (written examination/interview) for qualified applicants.
1. Written examination
(1) Examination subjects
English, Mathematics, Science Comprehensive (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
The full score is 100 points and the examination time is 120 minutes.
(2)Examination date: Starting from December 2023, it will be held on the 15th of each month.
2. Interview: The interview focuses on the applicant’s overall quality and language communication skills.
The school will make a comprehensive assessment based on the results of the written exam and the interview, and will accept the applicants on the basis of merit. Those who do not pass the exam may apply for transferring to the Foundation program.
★ According to the actual situation, the information related to the examination may be adjusted, please pay attention to the website of the School of International Education and email notification.
★ The pre-admission results will be announced from January 2024. Applicants must prepay the deposit which is part of the tuition fee for confirmation within the deadline, otherwise the applicant will be deemed to give up the pre-admission qualification.
★ Applicants can check the result of admission on SMU International Students Management System, and the Admission Notice with an official seal of SMU will be sent afterwards.
★ Visa Application for Study in China (JW202) are fully electronic from 2023 onwards, and will be sent to the email address that the applicant has filled in on the application system. Please download it from your computer in time, as there are a total of 10 chances to download it.
★ After receiving the Admission Notice and Visa Application for Study in China (JW202), applicants shall apply for Study Visa in China to the Chinese Embassy (Consulate General) and other visa agencies with the following materials: Admission Notice, Visa Application for Study in China (JW202), the original copy and photocopy of Physical Examination Record for Foreigner and valid passport.
VIII. Admission Date
Students should register in September 2024, and the specific time shall be subject to the date marked on the Admission Notice.
★Students admitted shall register at School of International Education with the original copies of the Admission Notice, Visa Application for Study in China (JW202), passport, certificate of physical examination and other relevant materials in accordance with the prescribed time on the Admission Notice.
Students who cannot register on time due to certain reasons shall obtain prior consent of the University.
Those who fail to register within the given time without approval will be regarded as waiver of registration.
IX. Charging Standard
1.Registration fee: RMB 800 /person, which will not be returned.
2. Tuition: RMB 45,000 /academic year.
3. Accommodation fee (1 academic year counted as 10 months):
Double room: RMB 9,000 /person/academic year;
Triple room: RMB5,000/person/academic year.
4. Other fees including textbook costs, board expenses, medical expenses, utility bills, drinking water charges, internet charges, medical insurance expenses, visa extension expenses, etc. shall be paid accordingly by the international students.

X. Scholarships
Self-supporting international freshmen can apply for Guangdong Government Outstanding International Students Scholarship for Freshmen, Southern Medical University President Scholarship for International Students, or Southern Medical University Outstanding International Students Scholarship for Freshmen.
