Brief introduction of Tongji University
Tongji German Medical School同济德文医学堂 was founded in 1907 by Erich Bolon埃里希•宝隆, a German doctor, with the support of the Chinese and German governments and all sectors of society．
In 1912, it was jointly known as the Tongji German Medical Engineering School together with the newly founded Tongji German Literature and Engineering School同济德文医工学堂．
In 1917, it was taken over by the Chinese and successively renamed Tongji Medical School同济医工学校 and private Tongji Medical Engineering College同济医工专门学校．
It was named Tongji University in 1923 and became a national university in 1927．
Began in 1949, the national departments’ adjustment, Tongji university, the original article method to mechanical motor shipbuilding advantages of disciplines of surveying and mapping or medicine support other colleges and universities, or whole moves inland. At the same time, more than 10 universities nationwide related to civil engineering and construction of discipline convergence of Tongji, making it the largest most complete subject in the field of national civil engineering and construction engineering at the university．
In 2000, it merged with Shanghai Tiedao University上海铁道大学 to form the new Tongji University．

Education Achivements and Rankings
At present, Tongji University has 29 professional colleges, 11 affiliated hospitals, and 13 affiliated primary and secondary schools. There are four main campuses, including Siping Road四平路, Jiading嘉定, Huxi湖西, and Hubei湖北, covering an area of about 2.56 square kilometers, with a total construction area of more than 1.84 million square meters and a total library collection of more than 4.55 million volumes．
The school covers 10 disciplines such as engineering, science, medicine, management, economics, philosophy, literature, law, education, and art. There are 82 undergraduate enrollment majors, 44 master’s degree first-level discipline authorization points, 27 professional master’s degree authorization points, 34 doctoral degree first-level discipline authorization points, 9 professional doctoral degree authorization points, and 30 postdoctoral mobile stations. It has 3 national key laboratories, 1 national engineering laboratory, 1 national major scientific and technological infrastructure, 1 national collaborative innovation center, 1 national large-scale scientific instrument center, 5 national engineering (technology) research centers, 6 other national research platforms, and 77 provincial and ministerial research platforms．
As of 2021, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked Tongji University 47th in Asia and 16th in China with its teaching and research performance.
Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the “Shanghai Ranking”, placed Tongji University 151-200th in the world, 16th in China.
The results of the third round of national university discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education were released, and Tongji University had a total of 40 first-level disciplines participating in the evaluation, 9 disciplines ranked in the top 5, 13 disciplines ranked in the top 10, and 24 disciplines ranked in the top 20. The department of civil engineering of Tongji University continued to rank first in the country, and each individual indicator of talent training ranked first．
The Department of Economics and Management of Tongji University has successively passed the two top certifications of global business, AMBA, and EQUIS (so far 142 business schools around the world have been accredited), and only 8 universities in China have obtained accreditation from the School of Economics and Management．
Campus buildings
Auditorium大礼堂：The Grand Hall of Tongji University, built-in 1961, was the largest auditorium in the Far East. Its 40-meter-wide arch network structure was praised as the largest of its kind in Asia at that time, and it was known as the first hall in the Far East．
Wenyuan Building文远楼：This was the exquisite dream of the school of Architecture and Urban Planning when it was founded, and now it has become an eternal classic．
Sanhao Dock三好坞：In the 1950s, teachers and students volunteer labor built, named Sanhao三好, meaning that students do “Sanhao students三好学生”.
