Overview

A Brief Introduction

Founded in 1906, Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts (TAFA) was originated from Beiyang Women’s Normal School by famous modern educator Fu Zengxiang,which has over 100 years history of education. Since the middle of last century, higher art education has been running for more than half a century.

Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts  was officially named as one of the eight independent fine arts colleges in China in 1980, which is a professional higher art college with complete disciplines and strong strength. It has an important position in the field of higher art education in China and is an innovative experimental area of national talent training model.

The school has Tianwei Road and Zhicheng Road campuses, covering an area of 117,700 square meters and a building area of 155,000 square meters. There are 22 undergraduate majors and 12 secondary colleges. At present, there are more than 5,161 full-time students, including about 4,062 undergraduate students and about 1,091 graduate students.

TAFA adheres to the motto “Striving for Integrity and Artistry, Enhancing Learning and Practice”, which follows the law of high art education, and strives to cultivate high-quality artists and designers with solid foundation, rich humanity, art facility, active creativity, and both morality and talent.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Citizenship & Education: Applicants must be non‑Chinese citizens holding at least a high school diploma.
  • Age Limits: Undergraduate hopefuls should be under 30 years old; graduate candidates under 35.
  • Health & Conduct: Good physical and mental health with no criminal record is mandatory.
  • MOE Compliance: All candidates must satisfy the Ministry of Education’s “Notice on Regulating the Acceptance of International Students” (Document No. 12, 2020).

Academic Structure & Instruction

  • Degree Length: Undergraduate programs span 4–5 years; master’s and doctoral tracks vary by discipline.
  • Teaching Language: All courses are delivered full‑time in Chinese, ensuring immersion in both language and art practice.
  • Application Window: January 20 to May 20, 2025.

Application Materials

Prospective students must prepare:

  1. Completed TAFA International Student Application Form.
  2. Valid passport copy (expiry after April 1, 2026).
  3. Notarized highest‑degree diploma and transcripts (with proof of expected graduation if applicable).
  4. Digital art portfolio: ≥5 pieces each in color painting, sketch, and quick sketch, including at least one figure and still life per category.
  5. Personal statement in Chinese detailing study/research plan, family background, awards, plus a 2‑minute video introduction.
  6. HSK certificate (Level 5+ for Art Design, Fine Arts, Art Management; Level 4+ for other majors; exempt for Malaysian independent high school grads).
  7. Recent passport‑style photo (white background).
  8. Letters of recommendation (1 for undergraduates; 2 from associate‑professor level or above for postgraduates).
  9. Local Certificate of No Criminal Record.
  10. (If under 18) Notarized guardian consent.
  11. (For naturalized Chinese students) Naturalization proof and four years of overseas residence documentation.

Selection & Admission

TAFA’s International Affairs Office reviews applications and convenes expert panels for final admission decisions. Results are published on the TAFA website (www.tjarts.edu.cn) upon completion of evaluations.

Tuition, Fees & Living Costs

  • Tuition: ¥28,000 / year for undergraduates; ¥30,000 / year for postgraduates; ¥3,000 / month for advanced‑study students.
  • Materials: Painting supplies and tools at student expense.
  • On‑Campus Housing: ¥1,200 / month (single); ¥600 / month (double).
  • Insurance: Mandatory comprehensive coverage at ¥800 / year.

Scholarship Opportunities

  1. Tianjin Municipal Government Scholarship
    • Undergraduates: Full ¥34,800 or partial ¥20,000 (age‑capped at 30).
    • Postgraduates: Full ¥47,800 or partial ¥30,000 (age‑capped at 35).
  2. TAFA International Student Scholarship
    • First Class: Full tuition, 10‑month accommodation, medical insurance.
    • Second Class: 50% tuition, 5‑month accommodation, medical insurance.
    • Third Class: 50% tuition, medical insurance only.
