In 1979, the Capital Gymnasium 首都体育馆 held a grand concert. Su Xiaoming, who was originally a chorus performer, needed to perform solo for the first time in front of nearly 20,000 audiences. Because she was young, she was inexperienced, excited and nervous, so she didn’t dare to go on stage because of her inexperience.

An old comrade in the band frightened Su Xiaoming and said, “You have to go on stage if you cry, or I’ll beat you up if you don’t go up!” In this way, Su Xiaoming was forced to go on stage with tears in his eyes. In the noisy voice of the audience, Su Xiaoming just sang the first sentence of the song Red River Valley, and the audience suddenly fell silent.

Su Xiaoming has been warmly loved by the audience since then. When the new star concert was held in Beijing the following year, Naval Political department of the Song and Dance Troupe 海政歌舞团 sent Su Xiaoming to perform on behalf of the troupe.

At that time, the French Chinese Su Xiaoming prepared foreign songs. The leaders thought it was inappropriate, so they asked the lyricist Ma Jinxing and the songwriter Liu Shizhao to write a Chinese song with naval characteristics according to Su Xiaoming’s voice conditions.

Ma Jinxing, who received the task, and composer Liu Shizhao rushed to compose the song The Night Of Naval Port. Accompanied by the Haizheng Light Music Ensemble, they boldly moved the drum set to the stage.

Xiaoming’s first performance of The Night Of Naval Port at the Nova Concert was well received by the audience.
