Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Zhangjiang Institute for Advanced Study is inviting outstanding overseas researchers to apply for the 2025 Excellent Young Scholars Fund (Overseas) of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
Program overview
The fund aims to attract accomplished overseas researchers, including foreign nationals, in natural sciences and engineering to conduct independent research in China. It supports young scholars in advancing their careers and contributing to global scientific innovation.
Eligibility criteria
- Born on or after Jan 1, 1985.
- Hold a doctoral degree.
- Must have held a formal teaching or research position at an overseas university, research institute, or corporate R&D center for at least 36 consecutive months after earning their doctoral degree and before April 15, 2025.
- Applicants with exceptional achievements and a doctoral degree earned overseas may be eligible for a reduction in the required years of work experience.
- Must not have taken up full-time employment in China, except for those who have been working in China since Jan 1, 2024.
- Upon approval of the funding, applicants must resign from any overseas positions and commit to full-time work in China for at least three years.
Research fields
The program supports research in ultrafast science, materials science, DNA storage, glycobiology, synthetic science, and biomedicine.

Funding and support
Recipients of the program will national funding ranging from 1 to 3 million yuan ($140,000-$420,000) over three years, along with comprehensive support from the university and the institute:
- Household registration: Assistance with obtaining Shanghai residency.
- Salary and benefits: Competitive compensation and relocation allowances aligned with world-leading universities.
- Research support: Matching research funds proportional to national funding, adequate office and lab space as needed, and support in building research teams, with preferential policies for recruiting PhD and master’s students.
- Living support: Fully furnished talent apartments for the transition period, premium healthcare benefits, and access to top-tier education for children.
- Academic environment: An independent principal investigator system fosters a flexible and supportive research atmosphere.
Application process
Interested candidates should submit their CVs in both Chinese and English by Feb 17. The CV should include personal basic information, contact information, research fields, education and work experience, and major academic achievements (publications, projects, patents, and awards).
