Story of Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute
Cai Wenji, like her father, is a knowledgeable person. After her father’s death, another scuffle between Li Xi and Guo Si took place in Guanzhong area, and the people in Chang’an fled everywhere. Cai Wenji also went into exile with the refugees. At that time, the southern Xiongnu, who had long been attached to the Eastern Han Dynasty, took advantage of the chaos in the Central Plains and the separation of the princes. One day, Cai Wenji met Xiongnu soldiers and was robbed by them. When the Xiongnu soldiers saw her young and beautiful, they dedicated her to the Xiongnu’s Zuo Xian king.
She lived in southern Xiongnu for 12 years. Although she was used to the life of the Xiongnu, she still missed her hometown very much.
This time, Cao Cao thought of CAI Wenji and sent messengers to the southern Xiongnu with gifts to pick her up.
Of course, Zuo Xian King was reluctant to let Cai Wenji go, but he did not dare to disobey Cao Cao’s will, so he had to let Cai Wenji go back. Cai Wenji would certainly like to return to the hometown she misses day and night, But she felt sad to leave her children born in the Xiongnu. In this ambivalent mood, she wrote the famous poem ” Story of Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute “.
