Brief introduction of Beijing Normal University
Beijing Normal University is a key university directly under the Ministry of Education, and is a well-known institution with the main characteristics of teacher education, educational science and basic disciplines of arts and sciences.
The predecessor of the school is the Jingshi University Normal School京师大学堂师范馆, which was founded in 1902.
In May 1908, the Excellent Normal School of Beijing Normal University京师大学堂优级师范科 changed its name to Beijing Normal School京师优级师范学堂 and moved its address to Changdian Wucheng School厂甸五城学堂.
In 1923, the school was renamed Beijing Normal University北京师范大学, becoming the first normal university in Chinese history.
In 1931 and 1952, Peking Women’s Normal University北平女子师范大学 and Fu Jen University辅仁大学 were merged into Beijing Normal University.
For more than 100 years, Beijing Normal University has been sharing a common destiny with the Chinese nation’s progressive cause of independence, freedom, democracy and prosperity, and has played an important role in the May 4th五四运动 and December 9th一二九运动 patriotic movements. After more than one hundred years of development, the school adheres to the fine tradition of “patriotism and progress, honesty and simplicity, truth-seeking and innovation, being a model for teachers” and the school motto spirit of “Learn to be a teacher, act as an example for the world”, forming the educational concept of “studying and cultivating one’s morality, helping the world”.
Education Achivements and Rankings
Beijing Normal University is composed of two campuses (including four campuses) in Beijing and Zhuhai珠海. There are more than 24,000 full-time students in the Beijing北京 campus, and the Zhuhai珠海 campus was officially approved by the Ministry of Education教育部 in April 2019, with more than 3,600 students. The school has 3 faculties, 27 colleges, 2 departments, 11 research institutes (institutes), and 4 colleges.
At present, there are 77 undergraduate majors, 38 first-level disciplines authorized for master’s degrees, 32 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, and 28 postdoctoral research mobile stations. And 38 disciplines cover 10 disciplines, forming a comprehensive discipline layout. According to the results of the 2016 first-level discipline evaluation (fourth round) released by the Degree and Graduate Education Development Center of the Ministry of Education, the 6 first-level disciplines of education, psychology, Chinese Chinese, Chinese history, drama and film and television, and geography were rated A+, 2 first-level disciplines were rated A-, and 7 first-level disciplines were rated A-, ranking sixth among the national universities in the number of disciplines rated A+.
As of 2021, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked Beijing Normal University 36th in Asia and 12th in China with its teaching and research performance.
Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the “Shanghai Ranking”, placed Beijing Normal University 13th in China.
According to the international Discipline evaluation Indicators ESI(Essential Science Indicators) designated by the Academic degree Office of the Ministry of Education, in 2013, the university has 13 disciplines (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Engineering, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Ecology, Social Science) Botany and zoology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, etc.) are among the top 1% of ESI in the world, and the number of finalists is among the top 1% in China. General Social Sciences is one of the first three universities in China to enter the top 1% in the world.
Cooperation and exchange
Overseas Learning Platform: As of May 2018, BNU has signed cooperation agreements with nearly 500 university research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions, and has cooperated with more than 100 universities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Spain, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan on student exchange programs.
Innovative cooperation model: According to the official website of the school in January 2015, the school signed a cooperation agreement with Princeton University in the United States, so that students of the school can attend classes with Princeton students and accept the teaching of masters of the two universities.
Launched the International Young Leaders Growth Camp, with the participation of oxford universities, the University of Birmingham and other world-renowned universities and Beijing Normal University to build a cross-cultural exchange and cooperative research platform for college students, and cultivate future young leaders who can take responsibility for the development of society, the country and all mankind.
Signed agreements with Lyon II University of Rennes Business School in France and European Business School of Reutlingen University of Applied Technology in Germany to support student exchanges and double-degree programs of Hende experimental Class, as well as internships in French and German companies.
