Brief introduction of Beijing Institute of Technology
The predecessor of Beijing Institute of Technology is the Academy of Natural Sciences自然科学院, which was established in Yan’an延安 in 1940, and has gone through the period of running schools such as the Jin-Cha-Ji Border Region Industrial College晋察冀边区工业专门学校 and the School of Engineering of North China University华北大学工学院.
In 1949, it was located in Beijing and received the headquarters of the Chinese University of France and the three departments of mathematics, physics, and chemistry.
In 1952, it was named Beijing Institute of Technology北京工业学院.
In April 1988, Beijing Institute of Technology was renamed Beijing Institute of Technology.
Beijing Institute of technology as the first founded by the Communist Party of China中国共产党 in science and engineering university, inherit and carry forward Yan‘an延安 spirit, insist on facing the modernization, the world, and the future, insist on everything from the education teaching quality, all start from cultivating students’ all-round development, everything from giving the great motherland, aimed at major national strategic demand and world education development frontier science and technology, will promote defense science and technology and economic and social development.
Education Achivements and Rankings
The university now has 19 professional schools and 9 academies, as well as the Frontier Interdisciplinary Science Research Institute, Advanced Structural Technology Research Institute, Medical, and Industrial Integration Research Institute, and other teaching and scientific research units. Engineering Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Social Science, Environmental Science, and Ecology have been ranked in the top 1% of ESI international disciplines, including Engineering Materials science was ranked top 1 in both disciplines.
In recent years, combining traditional advantages and long-term development needs, the school has focused on the construction of “5+ 3” subject groups – “Efficient Damage and Protection” subject group, “New Material Science and Technology” subject group, “Complex System Perception and Control” subject group, “Carrier Equipment and Manufacturing” subject group, “Information Science and Technology” subject group and “Characteristic Science” subject group, “Medical and Engineering Integration” subject group, “Military-civilian Integration and Innovative Development” discipline group, forming a “Dominant engineering leading, characteristic science integration promotion” discipline group, The overall construction layout of the discipline of high-quality liberal arts auxiliary linkage and cutting-edge cross-innovation interaction” has been formed.
As of 2021, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked Beijing Institute of Technology 19th in China with its teaching and research performance.
Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the “Shanghai Ranking”, placed Beijing Institute of Technology 19th in China.
In 2016, it led the award of 3 National Science and Technology Awards国家科学技术奖; in 2017, it led 2 National Science and Technology Awards国家科学技术奖; in 2018, the school led the award of 6 National Science and Technology Awards国家科学技术奖, including 1 first prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress国家科技进步; in 2019, the school led the award of 5 National Science and Technology Awards 国家科学技术奖, including 1 first prize of National Technological Invention 国家技术发明. A number of scientific and technological achievements directly serve the national economy and people’s livelihood in major projects.
Internationally, the school has signed university-level cooperation agreements with more than 346 universities in 75 countries and regions on 6 continents, and set up student exchange programs with more than 70 partner universities such as Munich Polytechnic University in Germany, RWTH Aachen University of Technology, Baumann State Technical University in Russia, Delft Institute of Technology in the Netherlands, Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan, Technion University in Israel, and Illinois Polytechnic University in the United States, forming a global network for the internationalization of talent training.
Scientific Research:
The university has created many “firsts” in the history of science and technology of New China: The first TV transmitting receiver, the first secondary solid altitude detecting rocket, the first light tanks, the first low-altitude gar, the first 20 km remote camera, etc., in precision, efficient mutilate, mobile penetration, long-range suppression, and against the national defense science and technology fields such as military information system represents the national level, It has obvious advantages in intelligent bionic robots, green energy, modern communications, industrial process control, and other dual-use technologies.
In the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the National Day国庆70周年庆, the school participated in the equipment development of 10 of the 12 flight teams and 26 of the 32 ground equipment teams in the parade equipment, and directly participated in a number of digital performance and simulation tasks, fireworks technology tasks and technical support work of float design.
In the Beijing Olympic Games北京奥运会, Shanghai World Expo上海世博会, Guangzhou Asian Games广州亚运会, rendezvous and docking between Shenzhou VIII神舟八号 and Tiangong-1天宫一号, etc., a number of technologies developed by the school have achieved excellent performance.
Famous Alumni
Over the past 70 years since its establishment, the Beijing Institute of Technology has cultivated more than 180,000 graduates. Among its alumni, 35 academicians, more than 110 government leaders at provincial or ministerial level and more than 40 generals have emerged.
For example the member of the Standing Committee of the 16th Politburo of the CPC Central Committee十六届中共中央政治局常委 Ye Xuanping叶选平, China’s famous radar expert, the pioneer and founder of China’s modern early warning aircraft industry, known as the “father of China’s early warning aircraft” Wang Xiaomo王小谟.
