The Tibetan Plateau 青藏高原 is a song written and composed by Zhang Qianyi 张千一 and sung by soprano Li Na 李娜. It is the opening song of the 1994 TV series “Tianlu 天路”, which was included in the music album “The Tibetan Plateau” released by Li Na in 1998.
Story Of The Tibetan Plateau
At the end of 1994, the crew of the TV series “Tianlu” invited Zhang Qianyi to compose music for the title. This TV series depicts the construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Highway by our army in Tibet, showing the great contribution of the People’s Liberation Army to the unity of the Tibetan and Han nationalities. After reading the script and video materials, Zhang Qianyi was moved and accepted the invitation solemnly.
Zhang Qianyi wrote the lyrics of The Tibetan Plateau at random, and asked the screenwriter and director to tell the lyricist to grasp the connotation of the lyrics in this way, but the director decided to use Zhang’s lyrics immediately after reading it.
After the lyrics were settled, Zhang Qianyi started to compose the song, and the progress was very smooth. A week later, the lyrics and music for The Tibetan Plateau were completed. Zhang Qianyi invited Li Na to audition and made adjustments according to Li Na’s voice.
Zhang Qianyi had not been to Tibet 西藏自治区 when he created The Tibetan Plateau. What he depicts is Tibet in his mind, the purest kingdom of heaven he yearns for, and the holiest sanctuary in his spiritual world.
When Li Na sang The Tibetan Plateau, she used both ethnic and popular singing methods. Li’s singing is soul-stirring, perfectly combining the rich Tibetan style with her unique voice, accurately restoring the breathtaking scenery such as the blue sky and white clouds, snow-capped mountains and plateaus, and holy palaces in the minds of the audience. Especially the last sentence of the song, full of explosive and penetrating timbre, perfectly presents the realm of the work.
When Li Na sang this song in the recording studio, the director and the band members were stunned. After a long period of silence, heartfelt and prolonged applause broke out. Who can not be moved by this pure, holy voice?
The reason why this song has become a classic is not only because of the fusion of the artistic conception of the lyrics and music and the singer, but also because of the needs of the people, but also because of the soul call of the return of human nature.
In May 2001, the song won the Gold Award for Vocal Works at the First China Music Golden Bell Awards.
In October 2008, the song won the Medal of Popular Golden Melody for the 30th Anniversary of Reform and Opening Up.
In June 2019, the song was selected as one of the “100 Excellent Songs for the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China” by the Central Propaganda Department.
Lyrics of The Tibetan Plateau
English Translation
If it’s a call from remote antiquity
a prayer for ten thousand years?
What if there is a song without words,
Or an attachment daunting forever?
Ah, I see mountains with endless horizon
standing up each other
My mother told me
It is Tibetan Plateau
Many nights, we gaze
upon the sky
We dream immortal life
Isn’t it an anthem
or the untouchable grandeur!
Oh
I see mountains with endless horizon
standing up each other
My mother told me17
It is Tibetan Plateau
It is my Tibet Plateau
