the Lion and the Sheep

The lion, with its sharp teeth and claws, endows it with powerful combat effectiveness. Its majestic aura is sufficient to intimidate all beasts and is undoubtedly the king in the animal world.

The sheep, being timid and docile, can hardly cause any harm to other animals. They habitually gather in large groups. Whether running or eating, there is always a large throng.

Is there a possibility that these two species with such great differences are actually of the same origin? And their differences are caused by human guidance and manipulation.

In “The Prince”, written by Machiavelli from the perspective of serving the monarch, it is blatantly proposed that the monarch should possess both the strength of a lion and the cunning of a fox.

For achieving political goals, using means such as fraud and violence is not only feasible but also should not be bound by traditional moral concepts at all when employed.

The monarch should establish a majestic image, such as presenting positive qualities like mercy and keeping one’s word. But it is also possible to cast aside this set of qualities at any time as needed and become a great hypocrite.

In “The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind”, written by Gustave Le Bon, it is acutely observed that when an individual integrates into a group, their independent thinking and reasoning ability will be significantly reduced. They will abandon their rational thinking and blindly follow the behavior and way of thinking of the group. In simple terms, just like a flock of sheep, they start to follow the trend.

Lies don’t even need to be told a thousand times to be regarded as truth. When three people spread a rumor about a tiger, people believe it. For the sake of safety, most people will believe the principle that “a tree that stands out in the forest will be destroyed by the wind”. But does this sense of safety gained from integrating into the masses also emasculate one’s ability to think independently?

Please read these two books together. Then, make your choice between being a lion or a sheep.

the Lion and the Sheep
