Brief introduction of Sun Yat-sen University
In 1924, Dr. Sun Yat-sen孙中山 established National Guangdong University国立广东大学 by integrating the modern higher education model of many schools in Guangzhou. He wrote the school motto: “Learn extensively博学, Interrogate carefully审问, Think carefully慎思, Distinguish clearly明辨 and practice earnestly笃行”.
After the death of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the school was named National Sun Yat-sen University国立中山大学 in 1926.
After the adjustment of national faculties in 1952, the former Department of Arts and Sciences of Sun Yat-sen University merged with the Department of Arts and Sciences of Lingnan岭南 University to form the new Sun Yat-sen University, and Sun Yat-sen University was incorporated into the former Lingnan University Site Kangyuan. Beginning in 1952, large-scale departmental adjustments were carried out in colleges and universities across the country.
Today’s Sun Yat-sen University was formed in October 2001 through the merger of Sun Yat-sen University and Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences, which had been established separately after the adjustment of schools and departments in 1952.
Sun Yat-sen University was founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen and has a tradition of running schools for more than 100 years. As a university directly under the Ministry of Educationjyubu of China, Sun Yat-sen University has become a first-class modern comprehensive university in China and has an international reputation through the joint construction of the ministry and province. It is now composed of three campuses, five campuses and ten affiliated hospitals in Guangzhou广州, Zhuhai珠海, and Shenzhen深圳. Sun Yat-sen University is moving towards a world-class university and striving to become a global academic center.
Education Achivements and Rankings
There are 51 first-level disciplines authorized for doctor’s degrees, 59 first-level disciplines authorized for master’s degrees, 4 professional doctoral degrees, and 33 professional master’s degrees. In the fourth round of the National Discipline Level Assessment organized by the Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Center of the Ministry of Education in 2016, 50 disciplines of SYSU university participated in the assessment, including 14 A-level disciplines (A+, A, A-).
According to the list of “Double First-class” disciplines published by the State in 2017, 11 disciplines of USTC have been selected, and the number of disciplines selected is tied for the 8th place in China, indicating that SYSU ranks among the top universities in China in terms of the overall strength of disciplines.
Sun Yat-sen University has six key research bases on the Ministry of Education humanities and social science, eight Guangdong广东 province key research base of humanities and social sciences, 1 national Hanban key base four Guangzhou humanities and social science key research base of a Zhuhai key research base of humanities and social sciences, research base of two other ministries, has covered the city of provincial-level key research base of liberal arts.
As of 2021, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked Sun Yat-sen University 39th in Asia and 12th in China.
Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the “Shanghai Ranking”, placed Sun Yat-sen University 89th in the world and12th in China.
According to the newly released data of the Essential Science Indicators Database (ESI), 17 disciplines of SYSU enter the top 1% of the ESI ranking, second only to Peking University, which has 19 disciplines in the ranking, and Zhejiang University, which ranks second in the country.
The school’s ability to face the frontiers of science and technology in the world and serve the needs of the country has been continuously improved, and the sum of the number of approved annual projects of the National Social Science Fund and the general projects of humanities and social science research of the Ministry of Education (excluding special projects) has remained the first in the country for 5 consecutive years.
The number of projects approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China during the centralized declaration period has ranked second in the national universities for 4 consecutive years; and the total number of projects approved by the National Key Research and Development Program since its implementation in 2016 ranks fifth in the national universities.
Scientific research
The school strives to promote the construction of major scientific and technological infrastructure such as the “three major constructions”, and breakthroughs have been made in the construction of major platforms and major scientific and technological infrastructure clusters such as Lyra Center, Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of Southern Marine Science and Engineering, Marine Comprehensive Scientific Expedition Practice Ship, National Supercomputing Guangzhou Center, Precision Medicine Science Center, and Zhongda Spectrometer, and the innovation system supporting future development is taking shape.
The Lyra project天琴计划 is a space gravitational wave detection program proposed by Academician Luo Jun罗俊 and led by our university.
In May 2018, Lyra planned a new generation of laser-ranging angle reflectors to be launched with the Change-4 “Queqiao鹊桥” relay satellite.
In November 2019, the Lyra Program laser ranging station successfully measured all five laser reflector signals on the moon for the first time in China, making China the third country in the world to have this capability.
In December 2019, the “Lyra-1天琴一号” technology test satellite was successfully launched, the six key technologies passed the on-orbit verification, all indicators reached the highest level of similar technology in China, and the indicators of the inertial sensor of the core equipment of space gravitational wave detection were increased by 2 orders of magnitude, and the results were listed on the 2020 science and technology calendar of Science and Technology Daily科技日报.

In the past century, Sun Yat-sen University has a large number of excellent alumni, including academic predecessors and educators who have made great contributions to China’s modern science, culture and education. There are 12-second prizes for national scientific and technological progress国家科技进步 and 14-second prizes of the National Natural Science Award国家自然科学.
Such as the former member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Hainan Provincial Committee中共海南省委常委 and the Secretary of the Political and Legal Affair政法委书记, Chen Zhirong陈志荣, and classical literary scholar, literary historian and calligraphy artist Zhan Antai詹安泰.
