  • Beijing’s Best (Kind of) Beer Gardens

    14:36 Author:Katie Coy

With the peak summer heat behind us, it’s now the perfect time of year to enjoy a beverage or two outside before the warm weather fades away. Recently we’ve been taking a look at some of Beijing’s best rooftops and terraces but what about beer gardens? Strictly speaking, in my "expert opinion" as a Brit, Beijing doesn’t really have what I would classify as a beer garden as there aren’t any “proper” pubs here. However, they do have some places that come pretty close. There are also many bars with courtyards around the capital, which I would argue is a sort of Chinese version of a beer garden. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at what the capital has to offer! For our rundowns of rooftops and terraces, you can check out these articles: Sanlitun and Gongti’s Best Rooftops and Terraces Gulou and Andingmen’s Best Rooftops and Terraces The Best Rooftops & Terraces Along the Liangma River Even More of Beijing’s Best Rooftops and Terraces COMMUNE RESERVE Located directly north of Dawanglu, COMMUNE RESERVE has a stunning outdoor space that I’d say comes as close to a beer garden as you’re going to get here. Those developed by Shenzhen companies have stood out among their cutting-edge competitors. Shenzhen-based UBTECH Robotics, China's largest manufacturer of educational and humanoid robots, debuted its industrial scenario solution for humanoid robots, marking the world's first such solution applied in industrial settings. This new offering integrates UBTECH's latest research and development achievements. Based on core technologies, UBTECH's Walker S series of industrial humanoid robots can perform multiple tasks, including intelligent movement, sorting, quality testing, tightening screws, and part installation. "Humanoid robots are rapidly moving towards real-world applications," a UBTECH staff member said on-site. • WEDZ’s new energy sector booms

    12:16 Author:Wuhan News

The extended-range version of the eπ007, manufactured by Dongfeng Motor Corporation in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone, is launched in Beijing on Aug 9. Dongfeng eπ, a new series under Dongfeng Motor Corporation, launched its third new model – the extended-range version of the eπ007, in Beijing on Aug 9. This follows the debut of the pure electric version of the eπ007 in March and the eπ008, a large, family-oriented, intelligent SUV, in June. These launches exemplify the rapid transformation and upgrading of the automotive industry within the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ), home to Dongfeng Motor's headquarters and a major production and R&D base for passenger vehicles. The zone has seen the launch of at least eight new energy vehicles this year. Yu Fei, general manager of the Dongfeng eπ Marketing Division, highlighted that the newly launched extended-range version of the eπ007 offers a full fuel and electric range of up to 1,200 kilometers, allowing for a seamless journey from Wuhan to major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Officially unveiled in November last year, Dongfeng eπ targets the mainstream NEV market with a price range of 130,000 to 250,000 yuan ($34,823.21). This segment has…Original link

  • Popular science lights years of knowledge, progress

    11:59 Author:Wuhan News

From top to bottom: Tan Xianjie, gynecologist; Gou Lijun, astrophysicist; Deng Zixin, microbiologist. CHINA DAILY In recent years, an increasing number of scientists in China have gone outside their work bubble to share their knowledge with the public. They are frequently seen speaking at campuses and on television shows and short videos, while many of their books on popular science have become best-sellers. Tan Xianjie, chief physician at Peking Union Medical College Hospital's Gynecological Cancer Center in Beijing, said he believes the purpose of popular science is to help people avoid illness and reduce the incidence of late-stage diseases. Consultations and surgeries make up most of the 54-year-old gynecologist's work day. But during his spare time he shares his medical knowledge of women's health issues with the public. He writes popular science books, answers patients' questions online, and shares his medical knowledge on TV programs. Healer, educator Uttering words such as "menstruation", "uterus" and "vagina "might make some men slightly uncomfortable in public settings, but Tan doesn't mind saying them. He said no doctor can cure every disease, and the most skilled surgeon can only perform four or five surgeries in one day. The maximum daily number of patients a…Original link

  • Rock Out at CoaCHUARlla Fest II This Saturday, Aug 24

    11:40 Author:Katie Coy

This Saturday, Aug 24, CoaCHUARlla Fest will be returning to DDC with another amazing line up of seven Beijing based bands with a helping of chuanr on the side. The previous fest, which took place back in January last year was a huge success and we can’t wait to see what’s in store this time around! To find out more, we reached out to David Bond, one of the co-organizers of the event and band member of The Harridans and Kuduvillands, who will both be playing at the fest alongside Sincerely Yours, Sergei; KyoYoko; Basement Queen; Simplicity Lover; and Spirit Rebellious. Hi David, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. This is the second CoaCHUARlla Fest, for those who aren’t familiar can you explain a bit about the idea behind it? It started as these things often do, three mates sitting at the pub over a few pints. Mike Fox, Dan Taylor and I had been organizing some small gigs around town for our own bands and were having a lot of fun inviting other local bands to join us. We decided we’d stretch out and see if we could do a small festival. Mike, I think it…Original link

  • Even More of Beijing’s Best Rooftops and Terraces

    19:59 Author:Katie Coy

There is no shortage of rooftops and terraces in Beijing, and we’ve already explored ones around Sanlitun, the hutongs, and the Liangma River. Today we’ve got the best of the rest, looking at places located in the CBD, near the Forbidden City as well as a few other spots dotted around the capital. Migas Mercado Located in the heart of Guomao, it’s hard to get better views than those at Migas Mercado, with its terrace overlooking the CCTV Tower, aka Big Pants (大裤衩 dà kùchǎ), and Beijing’s tallest building, the China Zun. Fluorescent orange and pink chairs give it a vibrant atmosphere, with the color scheme looking particularly impressive at night against the wall of funky red lanterns. Offering top-quality Spanish cuisine, they do some great weekday lunch deals and their weekend tapas brunch is not to be missed. They also have an extensive drinks menu and host regular DJ nights on the weekends. • Mandarin Monday: A History of the Word “Hutong”

    21:20 Author:Vincent R. Vinci

Ever wondered why hutongs are called hutongs, and not, just plain old alley or lane? Well, if any 胡同串子 hútong chuànzi (hutong wanderer) among you have been to Shijia Hutong Museum, then you'll probably know. For those who don't, what follows is a little history lesson. So what are hutongs, then? 胡同 hútòng is the name given to the generally grid-like alleyways that snake across Beijing. They’re very old, and mostly residential, but have had a habit over their long history of hiding some of the best in the capital’s cafés, bars, and hole-in-the-wall eateries. In a way, the hutongs are some of the last places you’ll see real Beijing life as it’s been – for the most part at least – centuries. Their history goes way back to before Beijing was Beijing, way back to when it was Khanbaliq – 大都 Dàdū in Chinese – the capital of the Mongol Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). It was during this period that thin lanes were built centered on the capital’s wells, or hottok. The name sticks, it’s transliterated into Chinese, and that’s the end of it, right? Not quite. According to the exhibit in the museum, there are a few guesses as…Original link
