Brief introduction of Nanjing Normal University
Located in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties, Nanjing Normal University is a national “double first-class” Construction University双一流建设高校, jointly built by the Ministry of education and the people’s Government of Jiangsu Province, and the first batch of key construction universities of the national “Project 211211工程”.
It has been selected into the national “111 plan111计划”, the National College Students’ cultural quality education base, and the Ministry of education’s overseas study demonstration base. It is one of the birthplaces of China’s higher normal education.
The main source of the school can be traced back to the founding of Sanjiang normal school in 1902, which has gone through the periods of Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, national fourth Sun Yat-sen University, Jiangsu University, National Central University, National Nanjing University and so on; Another source is Huiwen academy founded in 1888, which later developed into a private Jinling University. In 1951, it merged with Jinling Women’s College of Arts and Sciences (the former Jinling Women’s University) to establish a public Jinling University.
In 1952, colleges and departments of colleges and universities across the country were adjusted, and Nanjing Normal University was established at the former site of Jinling Women’s University on the basis of relevant colleges and departments such as Nanjing University and Jinling University.
It was renamed Nanjing Normal University in 1984. Nanjing Power College was incorporated in 2000.
As of February 2022, the school has three campuses, Xianlin仙林, Suiyuan随园, and Zijin紫金. Suiyuan campus has the reputation of being “the most beautiful campus in the East东方最美丽的校园”.

Nanjing Normal University is one of the first batches of open universities in China after the reform and opening up. It is a demonstration base for the Ministry of education to study in China, a base for teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the first batch of Chinese education bases, and a base for early childhood education and training in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.

Famous Alumni
In the past century, Nanjing Normal University has had a large number of outstanding alumni, including Xu Beihong徐悲鸿, a modern Chinese painter and art educator, who is a member of the Jingxing society. He is good at figures, animals, flowers, and birds, advocates realism, and especially praises Ren Bonian任伯年 in tradition. He emphasizes the reform of traditional Chinese painting and the integration of Western painting techniques. Painting advocates light and modeling and stresses the accurate grasp of the anatomical structure and bones of objects.
He also emphasized the ideological connotation of his works, which had a great impact on the Chinese painting circle at that time.
