Brief introduction of Lanzhou University

Lanzhou University is a national key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education, which has an important strategic position in the national higher education pattern and has an important influence and good reputation at home and abroad. There are two campuses in Chengguan城关 and Yuzhong榆中, with a campus area of 3544.32 acres.

Founded in 1909 as the Gansu Law and Politics School, the school is the first university with modern significance in northwest China.

In 1928, it was expanded to Lanzhou Sun Yat-sen University兰州中山大学.

In 1946, it was renamed National Lanzhou University.

After the founding of New China, in the adjustment of colleges and universities, it was identified as one of the 14 comprehensive universities in the country, and National Lanzhou University was renamed Lanzhou University, which is still used today.

Since the reform and opening up改革开放, it has been selected as a construction university of “Project 211” and “Project 985”, and in 2002 and 2004, the Gansu Grassland Ecology Research Institute and Lanzhou Medical College were successively merged into and returned to Lanzhou University.

In the course of running a school for more than 110 years, the university has stuck to the western region and worked hard for the country, walked out of the road of forging ahead to establish a world-class university in economically developed areas, and created “Lanzhou University phenomenon” which is famous at home and abroad, such as “one eight academicians” in chemistry, “three generations of teachers and students brave into the three poles of the earth” in geoscience, etc.

Nowadays, there are 25 first-level disciplines authorized by doctoral degrees, 47 first-level disciplines authorized by master’s degrees, 2 categories of authorization for doctoral professional degrees, and 24 categories of authorization for master’s degrees, covering 12 discipline categories, and it is one of the universities with degree authorization independent review. There are 21 postdoctoral research mobile stations. There are 8 national key disciplines and 2 national key disciplines.

Chemistry, atmospheric science, ecology, and herbalism were selected into the list of world-class disciplines. 13 disciplines, including chemistry, physics, materials science, geoscience, botany and zoology, mathematics, engineering, biology and biochemistry, environment and ecology, clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, agricultural science and social science, have entered the top 1% of ESI in the world, of which chemistry has entered the top 1% of ESI in the world. In the latest release of the Nature Index, Lanzhou University has published 171 papers in 68 journals recognized by the Nature Index, ranking 86th in the world, 126th in 2016, 25th in the Asia-Pacific region, 32nd in 2016, 11th in China, and 13th in 2016.

The university has successively won more than 700 national and provincial scientific and technological achievements awards and edited and published more than 1400 translated monographs and textbooks.

The university adheres to the principle of open education and actively carries out exchanges and cooperation with foreign countries. It has established exchanges and cooperation with 258 universities and research institutions in 44 countries and regions.

Nuclear Technology: The nuclear technology major of Lanzhou University is the earliest nuclear science and technology-related major established in China’s universities, and it is also the first batch of doctoral and master’s majors in China, and the main base for cultivating nuclear science and technology talents in China.

Pratacultural Science: Lanzhou University is the only key construction university of the 36 colleges and universities with grassland science majors in the country, and has only 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in grassland science.
