Brief introduction of Harbin Institute of Technology
In May 1920, the Sino-Russian Industrial School中俄工业学校 in Harbin哈尔滨 began to prepare for construction. The establishment of the school is directly related to the construction of the Middle East Railway in China by Imperial Russia (renamed “Medium-Long Railway中长铁路” after the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan抗日战争), and the purpose of the establishment of the school is to cultivate engineering and technical talents for the Middle East Railway, and the school runs according to the Russian education model.
In 1951, it was identified as one of the two model universities in the country to study the mode of higher education abroad.
In 1954, it entered the ranks of the first batch of 6 universities in the country, and was once known as the cradle of engineers.
In 2000, HIT merged with Harbin Jianzhu University哈尔滨建筑大学, one of the eight famous universities with the same roots, to form the new Harbin Institute of Technology.
In the long-term process of running the school, the school has comprehensively implemented the party’s education policy, adhered to the guiding position of Marxism, exemplified the implementation of the principal responsibility system under the leadership of the government, adhered to the fundamental mission of cultivating people with virtue, adhered to the first standard of teacher morality and teacher style. And formed the school motto of “strict specifications, hard work to the home”, cultivated the ideological and political work tradition of political guidance, typical guidance, brand driving, and school motto and education, and emerged a large number of advanced models in the country.
Education Achivements and Rankings
HIT has 20 schools offering 87 undergraduate majors covering 10 categories such as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, art, etc. The school currently has 9 national first-level disciplines and 6 national second-level disciplines. In the third round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education教育部, the school has 10 first-level disciplines ranked in the top five in the country, of which the discipline of mechanics ranks first in the country.
HIT has 10 state-level key laboratories, 1 national major scientific and technological infrastructure, 3 “2011 Plan” collaborative innovation centers, 2 national engineering research centers, 2 national defense science and technology research centers, and 47 provincial and ministerial key laboratories (institutes, institutes, centers).
In 2011, the school provided more than 20 technical supports in the rendezvous and docking mission between the “Tiangong-1天宫一号” target vehicle and the “Shenzhou-8神州八号” spacecraft. To this end, HIT won the honorary title of “Outstanding Contribution Collective of China’s Manned SpaceFlight Project中国载人航天工程突出贡献集体”.
In 2011, the party committee党委 of the school was awarded the honorary title of “National Advanced Grassroots Party Organization” by the CPC Central Committee中共中央.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked Harbin Institute of Technology 56th in Asia and 11th in China.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the “Shanghai Ranking”, placed Harbin Institute of Technology 11th in China.
Scientific research
According to the information on Hit’s official website, HIT has participated in 14 of the 16 major national science and technology projects, and achieved a number of significant landmark achievements in the fields of aerospace robot small satellite equipment manufacturing new energy and new materials.
The university has successfully developed and launched the “Test 1试验一号”, “Test 3试验三号”, “Kuaizhou 1快舟一号”, “Kuaizhou 2快舟二号” and “Lilac 2紫丁香二号” satellites, setting a record of five small satellites developed by Chinese universities.
Advanced microsatellite platform technology research, space robotic arm technology, satellite-to-ground laser link test, Kuaizhou star-arrow integration technology, and range optoelectronics and control systems in Shenguang III laser device were selected as the top ten scientific and technological progress of Chinese universities.
In the development process of Shenzhou series spacecraft, Harbin Institute of Technology has overcome a number of technical difficulties such as KM6 re-entry module welding deformation and correction technology three-axis simulation experiment rotary table astronaut training with simulated weightlessness training tank astronaut exit with reflector body in the “tiangong-1天宫一号” target aircraft and “Shenzhou神舟”. The university provided more than 20 technical support for the rendezvous and docking missions of the “NO” series spacecraft.
Famous Alumni
Hit used to be known as “the cradle of engineers” and “the cradle of teachers in science and engineering universities”. Many graduates become scientists and educators, while others become activists. For example, Sun Yunxuan孙运璇, former President of the Executive Yuan of Taiwan台湾, and Lee Jong-wook李钟玉, former Premier and Vice President of the DPRK Council, are both graduates of HIT in the 1930s and 1940s.
HIT also includes Ye Xuanping叶选平, Zou Jiahua邹家华, Li Changchun李长春 and many other party and state leaders.
