Brief introduction of East China Normal University
Founded on October 16, 1951, on the site of Daxia University大夏大学, Guanghua University光华大学, the university was the first socialist normal university established in New China.
Daxia University was founded in June 1924 in Shanghai by Wang Boqun王伯群, a veteran of Tongmenghui同盟会, and some teachers who broke away from Xiamen University厦门大学.
Guanghua University was founded in June 1925, which was separated from St. John’s University, an American missionary school.
St. John’s College, the predecessor of St. John’s University, was established in 1879. The University Department was established in 1891 and renamed St. John’s University in 1906. It is one of the earliest and oldest missionary universities in China and the first institution of higher learning in modern China.
The university is rooted in the fertile soil of the fine culture of the Chinese nation. In its 70 years of founding and 140 years of history, the university has developed into a comprehensive research-oriented university and made important contributions to China’s political, economic, cultural, educational, scientific, and technological development as well as social development.
Education Achivements and Rankings
As of January 2020, the university has two campuses, Zhongshan North Road中山北路, Minhang闵行, covering a total area of about 207 hectares. It has 4 academic departments,30 full-time colleges,4 academies,8 physical research institutes,2 management institutes, and 1 training center for Middle school principals of the Ministry of Education.
As of May 2018, the university has 30 first-class disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 37 first-class disciplines authorized for master’s degrees, 20 kinds of master’s professional degrees and doctor of education professional degrees, 25 post-doctoral research mobile stations, and 83 undergraduate majors.
It has two first-class disciplines of pedagogy and geography, five second-class disciplines, five national key disciplines, five national key cultivation disciplines, one Shanghai Gaofeng class I discipline, one Shanghai Gaofeng class II discipline, 12 Shanghai key disciplines, and 17 Shanghai first-class disciplines (4 in class A and 13 in class B).
As of 2021, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked East China Normal University 61st in Asia and 23rd in China with its teaching and research achievements.
Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the “Shanghai Ranking”, placed East China Normal University 23rd in China.
According to the ESI data released on May 11, 2017, among the 22 disciplines counted by ESI, 11 disciplines in total, including Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, Environmental Science and Ecology, Geoscience, Mathematics, Biology and Biochemistry, Botany and Zoology, Engineering, Clinical Medicine, and Social Science, have entered the top 1% in the world, ranking 17th among colleges and universities in China.

The mascot of East China Normal University is “Shida lion师大狮”. Its creativity comes from the homonym of the word “Shi师” in the school name and its characteristic elements as “the king of beasts”.
Famous Alumni
After the adjustment of colleges and universities in the early 1950s, a large number of first-class scholars such as Xu Jie许杰, Xu Zhenyu徐震堮, Shi Zhecun施蛰存, Xu Zhongyu徐中玉, Qian Gurong钱谷融 and so on all taught at East China Normal University.
From the proposition of “literature is human studies” triggered by Mr. Qian Gurong钱谷融, the landmark aesthetic works written by Mr. Wang Yuanhua王元化, to the great discussion of literary research methodology in the mid-1980s and the debate of humanistic spirit in the 1990s, the Chinese Department has won a great reputation in the academic circles and won the reputation of “the cradle of Chinese critics”.
