Air China operates maiden flight of C919, accelerating commercial operation
22:25 Author:en.hangzhou.com.cnAir China on Tuesday operated the maiden commercial flight of its first home-made C919 aircraft, becoming the second airline in China to use the aircraft after China Eastern Airlines. This is believed to be a further move to accelerate the commercial operation of the C919 plane.
Flight CA1523 took off from Beijing Capital International Airport and arrived at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport at 1 pm on Tuesday, and the national flag carrier said it plans to use the plane on the Beijing-Shanghai route as well as the route from Beijing to Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang Province.
Air China received its first home-made C919 on August 28 in Shanghai, together with China Southern Airlines, which also received its first C919 on the same day, a milestone for country's first domestically produced large passenger aircraft in entering a new phase of multi-operator deployment.
In an earlier interview with the Global Times, Wang Yan, captain of Air China's first C919 with the registration number B-919X, said that the plane is an excellent aircraft, achieving a very high standard in design and performance, as well as in terms of control and human-computer interaction.
Wang flew the plane back to Beijing on August 29, one day after it was delivered in Shanghai by the Commercial Aircraft Corp of China (COMAC), the manufacturer of C919.
The C919 is a large civilian aircraft developed in accordance with international civilian aviation regulations and with independent intellectual property rights, and it is regarded as a model to enhance China's competitiveness in the global aviation market.
Data from China Eastern Airlines, the first global user of the C919, showed that its C919 fleet -- which now has seven planes -- had carried 500,000 passengers as of September 1. It was put into operation on May 28, 2023.
More commercial flights of the C919 show that the plane has met the conditions for large-scale commercial operation and will enter the stage of full operation in the domestic civil aviation market, Lin Zhijie, an independent market watcher, told the Global Times on Tuesday.
China Southern plans to operate its maiden commercial flight of the C919 on September 19, flying from Guangzhou, South China's Guangdong Province to Shanghai, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
So far, nine C919 planes have been delivered to airlines by COMAC.

My strong connection with China: Kevin Watkins’ story
22:07 Author:en.hangzhou.com.cnKevin Watkins stands in a garden near Hangzhou, East China's Zhejiang province. (Photo provided by Kevin Watkins)
Ancient Chinese philosopher Laozi once said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." My connection with China began in just this way.
On March 4, 1981, my hometown Hastings, New Zealand, and Guilin, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, became the first New Zealand-China sister cities. In early 2003, I attended a reception held for a visiting delegation from Guilin and became friends with many Chinese people. The following year, I visited China with a delegation from Hastings District Council, taking my first step on the "thousand-mile journey" to understanding the country.
We visited Shanghai, Beijing, Guilin and other places. I was pleasantly surprised and enchanted by Guilin's stunning natural landscapes and diverse ethnic cultures. On my last evening in the city, I went to a cultural performance at the Children's Palace, where I was deeply attracted by the gorgeous costumes and movements of the Chinese dancers.
After several routes, a dancer came down from the stage to interact with the audience of over 200 individuals. Later, she slowly approached me and asked, "Would you like to dance?" I accepted the invitation though I was not skilled at dancing. As the music kicked in, we started the bamboo pole dance, gracefully moving slender bamboo poles in sync with the rhythm. Once the dance was over, the dancer who brought me on stage placed a beautiful garland around my neck, and we took a photo together after the show.
As I made my way back home, I could not stop thinking about the performance and was filled with regret for not expressing my gratitude to the dancer who gave me the garland. Upon my return to Hastings, I bought a New Zealand jade bangle for the young lady, even though I did not know her name. Therefore, I decided to send a letter to Guilin with the photo attached.
Maybe it was a fateful coincidence, or what the Chinese people often refer to as yuanfen, that led my letter and gift to reach the dancer, building a bridge of friendship between us. To this day, we still treat each other as brother and sister, often swapping stories about our lives.
In 2005, I went back to Guilin to re-encounter its unique charm. By Ronghu Lake, I came across two young Chinese women and we exchanged email addresses. Through our correspondence, I learned that they came from rural areas, and their parents had made every effort to provide them with educational opportunities. This stirred deep emotions within me and sparked a bold idea: I had once connected with the woman who invited me to dance through a photo; could there be more instances of such yuanfen?
I asked for a picture of the two women in their traditional costumes. Then, I initiated a "challenge," asking students in Hastings to find and identify them with only the photo as a clue. The first to accomplish the "challenge" would win a free trip to Guilin. This garnered significant attention from Hastings media and the public. Students flocked to libraries and computers, searching for any information about Guilin. During their search, they gained a deeper understanding of China's history, geography, culture and our sister city. Eventually, two students managed to find the women just a week later, despite the distance and language barrier.
Later, they went to Guilin and met the two women, who were also given the chance to visit New Zealand. They toured some local attractions and schools in Hastings and other cities, and even participated in the annual Hastings Blossom Parade, riding on the float I specially designed for them. I was pleasantly surprised by how well we did in this "challenge" and felt extremely accomplished.
Thereafter, I became more enthusiastic about the activities that facilitate friendly exchanges between Hastings and Guilin, and other parts of China. For instance, I led a small singing group from New Zealand to perform in Guilin, participated in expos held in Guilin and Nanning, and the Shanghai World Expo, and was invited to deliver a speech in Hengshui, north China's Hebei Province. I also invited an equestrian team from Beijing and monks from the Shaolin Temple in central China's Henan Province to perform in New Zealand, and gave speeches about China in multiple Hastings communities.
To celebrate the anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Hastings and Guilin, we designed window displays and exhibitions in the central business district, the council building, and other venues in Hastings to showcase images of China and decorative Chinese lanterns.
The belief in promoting mutual understanding between the two peoples has been driving me to move forward, and I was delighted to see the burgeoning relationships between the people of both countries.
In my view, the best way to understand a country is to go and see it for oneself, as a long journey always starts with a single step. For me, my connection with China has changed the trajectory of my life and enriched my experience. I hope that more people in New Zealand will see China's remarkable development for themselves and feel the warmth and hospitality of the Chinese people.

China’s development insights inspire young people from Africa
23:14 Author:en.hangzhou.com.cnBEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Amr Wahba, 31, loves the weather in southern China, calling it "warm and pleasant" compared to the climate in his hometown in Egypt.
Since arriving in Beijing to pursue doctoral study in pharmaceutical science at Tsinghua University last year, Wahba has traveled to various places in China, including Hangzhou city in the Yangtze Delta, where he celebrated the Spring Festival. His most recent trip to Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in August marked his first journey to a northern region outside the Chinese capital.
Wahba's travel opportunity came through the Tsinghua Global Youth Dialogue (TGYD), an intercultural initiative established by Tsinghua in 2023. TGYD invites young people from around the world to participate in tours and forums in China, fostering mutual understanding, promoting cooperation and encouraging engagement in addressing global challenges.
The main forum of the second TGYD took place on Aug. 29 and 30 at the Tsinghua campus, featuring two days of keynote speeches and discussions after the participants completed their tours to different parts of China earlier in the month.
Beginning their journey with a four-day visit to Shanghai on Aug. 19, 100 young participants, which include students, researchers and entrepreneurs from 35 countries, were later divided into three groups to explore southwestern province of Guizhou, eastern province of Zhejiang, and Inner Mongolia in the north.
In Inner Mongolia, Wahba was inspired by the solutions to desertification in Ordos, a city with approximately one-sixth of China's proven coal reserves, which, however, is shifting towards green economic development. He said it reminded him of similar efforts in Egypt, where over 90 percent of the land is desert.
"When they are changing the desert to become more green, they are thinking about adding more traditional medicine," he said, referring to the various herbs planted to combat sand encroachment, including some placed beneath solar panels in the desert.
Wahba, whose brother works in Egypt's new energy sector and is eager to explore potential collaboration with China, finally saw the widely used photovoltaic equipment he had heard about before.
According to statistics from the Ordos government, the value added in the city's wind and photovoltaic equipment manufacturing sectors experienced a 5.6-fold increase year on year in the first half of this year.
"Transferring the technology (related to new energy) will be very helpful for us," Wahba said, adding that the trip to Inner Mongolia served as a very useful experience for him.
According to Zhang Runzhou, deputy director of the Center for Global Competence Development at Tsinghua University, the TGYD tours have allowed young people to witness firsthand China's efforts in poverty alleviation, building a harmonious society and advancing green development.
Jenipher Asiimwe, a master's student majoring in film and television production at the Communication University of China, echoed Zhang's views. She said she was deeply impressed by her tour to Zhejiang, a province that was once part of ancient China's fertile Jiangnan region and is now a major innovation powerhouse.
Asiimwe, who hails from Uganda and has worked as a journalist in Africa for many years, highlighted the inclusiveness of innovation and the abundant opportunities for young people that she observed during her visits to science parks, technology companies, ancient towns, and a prosperous village known for its economic development success.
"Instead of looking for white-collar jobs, which is one of the norms of most African youth, what I've learned from here is that after graduating from university, you don't need to be employed by someone, you can create your own company and employ fellow youths in those companies," she said.
Asiimwe noted that she expects to see more cooperation between China and Africa, not just in infrastructure -- where Ugandans have already benefited from several projects -- but also in the digital economy, media and communication, and people-to-people exchanges.
"Let more young people come and experience what the real China is. I've already experienced it and now know the real China, not what we read on the internet," she said.
"Civilization flourishes through exchange and mutual learning," said Shi Zongkai, deputy chairperson of the University Council of Tsinghua University, at the opening ceremony of the TGYD main forum.
"We aim to create a global network for youth cooperation and communication, a community encouraging more profound interactions and collaborations and leading to a safer, more prosperous, and peaceful coexistence for humanity," he added.
For Hashim Amir Bashir, a 25-year-old Nigerian graduate of Beijing-based Beihang University, the significance of such an exchange opportunity is "huge" because it gives an opportunity to sit together, talk, and realize that people from across the world can work collaboratively.
This year, Bashir launched his business in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) with Chinese partners. During his visits to Shanghai and Zhejiang, the young entrepreneur felt "excited" and "motivated" by visiting technology companies, which deepened his understanding of entrepreneurship in China.
"It also proved to me that China is willing to help international people to come and start up their businesses, and also help them at the same time to connect with the rest of the world," he said.
Bashir plans to encourage more African youth to work and engage in entrepreneurship in China. He said he hopes that the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, scheduled for Sept. 4 to 6, will foster greater consensus on cooperation, including increased people-to-people exchanges.
He noted that Africa is one of China's key partners and vice versa, expressing optimism about achieving significant milestones and enhancing their relationship in the future.

Story| A healer and seeker in the world of TCM
21:11 Author:en.hangzhou.com.cnOr working in the Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine Photo provided to Hangzhoufeel
In the Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, amidst the sea of white coats, I noticed a doctor in hiking attire, with remnants of dried earth still clinging to the tips of his shoes--a mosaic of nature’s soul. What’s more, this doctor even performed a handstand in the middle of the hospital café!
He is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner intern from Israel, demonstrating his calisthenics skills during our interview. His name is Or Zoref, and he has traveled from his hometown to China to deepen his understanding of TCM at Zhejiang Chinese Medical University.
Growing up with parents who followed a holistic approach to life, Or, at the age of eight and suffering from a common stomach ache, was brought to Dr. Shlomi’s clinic, a Chinese acupuncturist in Israel. Since that fateful visit, Dr. Shlomi has become Or’s family doctor and a guiding light in his pursuit of TCM.
Or studied TCM for four years in Israel before coming to China. With each passing year, it became clear to him that this was his destiny. He describes TCM as his passion, burning like a fire: “I really enjoy it, and I already want to go back to my country and start treating people.” While Or noticed the differences in clinical application due to variations in diet, climate, and lifestyle between Israel and China, after completing his studies, he joined a special program that enabled him to come to China for a one-year internship rotation at a hospital.
Or did not know or speak any Chinese before coming to China, yet this did not hinder his love for practicing TCM. “None of my professors speak Chinese. We only recognize the words by pinyin. For example, if we see the word dàzǎo, we know it means red date, and we know its specific medicinal purposes.”
After arriving in China, despite the language and cultural gap, Or enjoys his time in Hangzhou. TCM has allowed him to appreciate the universal importance of movement in promoting health. Whether in Israel or China, movement is a fundamental component of well-being--a principle well understood by TCM practitioners. Or enjoys doing calisthenics, hiking, yoga, and exploring the natural landscapes of Hangzhou during his free time. “I usually hike around the mountains by West Lake, or sometimes I go to the mountains by Xianghu Lake.” Often, he wakes up at 4 a.m. to hike in the mountains, have breakfast, and arrive at the hospital in time to start work--hence his appearance in hiking attire beneath his white coat.
During his hikes, Or carries a box of new needles for acupuncture and packs of Chinese medicine in case of an emergency. “If someone faints or has serious pain, I can use them.” On a Sunday morning hike and yoga session last week, he brought along a pack of Chinese herbs that help improve his sleep, digestive system, and combat fatigue.
In fact, one of TCM’s most renowned practices--acupuncture--is his favorite. “One month ago, I had the best experience in the acupuncture department because you don’t need to know a lot of Chinese to understand what the doctors are doing. You just watch where the needles go, and you understand what acupuncture treatment the doctor is performing and which parts of the patient’s body need healing.”
Or often performs acupuncture on himself. “We all have our ups and downs in life. So, when I’m feeling down, I know I just need some needles, lie down, and relax for 30 minutes.”
TCM, with its roots sunk deep into the fertile soil of thousands of years, is a system of healing that views the body not as a battleground of symptoms and cures, but as a delicate balance of energies, a microcosm of the universe. As a foreigner, the concept of TCM may sound taboo to those unfamiliar with it. When asked how he would best introduce TCM to his friends and family, or other foreigners in general, Or said, “TCM heals the person, not the illness.”
In this journey, he finds not just healing for others, but a profound sense of healing for himself. His Israeli roots anchor him, providing the stability of home, history, and identity. Yet, the philosophies of the East, with their emphasis on balance and harmony, are the wings that allow his spirit to soar. His love for an active lifestyle is further emphasized when he quoted a Chinese saying: “When we are young, we exchange our health for money. When we are old, we exchange money for our health. So, it is important that we do things we love and take care of ourselves even at a young age.”

A stroll on Qinghefang creates enduring memories
20:11 Author:en.hangzhou.com.cnThe romance between the White Snake and her husband Xu Xian, a tale spanning a thousand years, is a unique cultural heritage of Hangzhou. To continue this, a theme street on the film White Snake: Afloat was opened at the historical Qinghefang area. Visitors will find it flawlessly reproducing the bustling alleyways, taverns, and tea houses depicted in the film, allowing them to experience the daily life back into the romance and feel the old-time vibes.
“I came all the way here because it was hot on social media,” said Ms. Zhang, a tourist from Jiangsu province. Into the area from the Drum Tower Square, you will immediately notice the layered yellow, red, and purple oil-paper umbrellas suspended above the water near the Southern Song Bookstore. The backdrop with the Chinese characters “White Snake” offers an orchestrated vibe of the Southern Song dynasty, making it feel as if you are traveling through a time warp.
To facilitate the opening of the theme street, the Urban Management Bureau of Shangcheng District, based on the new policy for outdoor business, provides one-stop service for urgent matters. Leveraging the characteristics and heritage of Qinghefang, the local authority encourage new business models with three event venues, i.e. Balazi Alley Square, Drum Tower Square, and Dajing Alley, covering a total area of 430 square meters.
“We’ve created great commercial vibes and envisioned the setup of more temporary promotional facilities. Themed settings, festive landmark installations, and displays are all good ways to help us widespread the culture of the Song dynasty. It’ll help gain foot traffic and enhance the business environment,” explained an official from the Urban Management Bureau of Shangcheng District. The three sites in the Qinghefang are featured with the wedding vows and peach trees covering 140 square meters, three poster walls, and more than 500 Neo-Chinese Style decorations such as oil-paper umbrellas, calligraphy works, and lanterns. They bring the Song-style aesthetics to life and hold back more travelers.
