A Few Things You Should Definitely Do Over Mid-Autumn Break
20:47 Author:Vincent R. VinciMid-Autumn Festival is fast approaching, and while the best thing you could arguably do during the break is to eat, drink, and listen at our very own Belt & Road Food Fest happening Sep 15-17 (scan the QR code in the poster below to buy tickets), we’ve put together a few other things we feel are worth checking out. This isn’t a comprehensive list – expect that to come later this week – but rather a look at a few things in the realms of history, art, music, food, and drink worth exploring. History Your best bet to get a sense of history over the holiday is underfoot, with the return of both Bizarre Beijing’s haunted nighttime walking tours and Beijing Postcards’ hutong scavenger hunts. Kicking things off on Friday the 13th (couldn’t pick a better night for a spook than Halloween), is Bizarre Beijing, which will take participants through the hutongs surrounding the city’s former execution grounds in Caishikou. The tour ends in the Huguang Opera Guild Hall in Xicheng, which was allegedly constructed over an ancient burial ground and… well, you know the rest. Spots are RMB 300/person add Jim Nobles on WeChat (ID: jimnobles) to sign up. On…Original link

Take the Subway and See: Yuanmingyuan, the Old Summer Palace
20:46 Author:Vincent R. VinciWant to explore far-flung places around Beijing without booking a car or trip just to do so? Hop on the subway! In this continuation of a series we ran over CNY, we'll be showcasing a few scenic spots and historic sites situated at or near the end of three subway lines. All you've got to do to get there is jump on the subway and take it to where you want to go. The Old Summer Palace Ruins Park (圆明园遗址公园 Yuánmíngyuán Yízhǐ Gōngyuán) What Is It? Constructed in 1707 during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the Old Summer Palace consists of three separate gardens coming together to create a massive complex spanning 2.9 square kilometers. Although it’s mostly remembered today for its looting and burning in 1860 during the Second Opium War, the Old Summer Palace was once a beautiful imperial park that featured striking examples of both Chinese and European-style architecture. During its heyday, the park served as the regular residence of the emperor and imperial family, with the Forbidden City only used for official ceremonies and occasions. Today, while it serves as a somber reminder of China’s turbulent past, it’s also a nice place to take a day and meander…Original link

Beijing’s Most Spec-taco-lar Taco Tuesday Deals
23:34 Author:Vincent R. VinciAnother week has come and gone, and now we find ourselves at Tuesday once again. While there are plenty of dining and drinking deals to be had on Tuesdays, a great many of us see it as one special day: Taco Tuesday. Yes, it’s time once again to gorge on morsels of meat, sauces, and such layered on a lovely round tortilla – the perfect vehicle for a snack or quick meal enjoyed with a lager or marg in hand. Beijing has deals a plenty on Taco Tuesday, and below we’ve compiled some of our favorites to recommend. Las Musas After a brief hiatus for renovation, Las Musas is back with a brand new look but the same fantastic burritos, chips, margaritas, and, of course, tacos. Speaking of tacos, their Taco Tuesday special still stands: RMB 150 for all-you-can-eat tacos (limited to 15 per person) all day long. That means you can mix and match from their stellar lineup of Chicken Tinga, Al Pastor, vegan Jamaica and more. We’d personally just order 15 of their Al Pastor tacos and call it a day, but that’s just us. What’s more, they’ve also got 25 percent off on Margarita Pitchers every Tuesday as…Original link

Why Chinese Parents are Buying Plastic Waste Online
23:32 Author:That is GuangzhouSince a revised guideline on household waste disposal was implemented back in May 2020, schools in China have been diligently working to educate their students about waste management and classification. As a result, many schools have seen their campuses trash cans get tidier (sadly, the same can’t be said about most neighborhood waste bins). Now, as China works to promote environmental awareness in schools, students are being taught about responsible recycling practices. In order to encourage these habits, teachers are assigning students to collect large amounts of plastic waste and other recyclable materials each month. Although they are sometimes voluntary, these recycling projects often have strict rules – requiring students to collect dozens of items – or even more – with failure to meet the quotas affecting their grades and teacher assessments. This has caused parents to start ordering plastic junk online. In recent months, ‘recycling waste’ has become one of the most popular product categories on Chinese e-commerce platforms such as the secondhand app Xianyu. Empty milk cartons available on Xianyu One of the more popular items is empty milk cartons – a bundle of 100 goes for around RMB30. Other items include cardboard, empty pens, and flattened bottles. Many people…Original link

Two Cafés to Check Out: One Weird, One With Beer
21:22 Author:Vincent R. VinciWe’d be willing to bet with all of the coffee shops in Beijing, you could (probably) enjoy a different cup from a different place each day until the end of the year. Today, we’ve got two to add to your list of places worth trying… and one of them serves beer. CLOSER This place pops out like some sort of movie theater along Andingmen Neidajie, and if the entrance doesn’t get you inside, the menu just might. Not just content with coffee, CLOSER has C早A晚 -- C Zǎo A Wǎn, aka morning coffee evening alcohol -- covered with brews on tap. They've got a number of breweries on tap from across China and beyond, making it a nice morning and afternoon spot, depending on your poison of choice. A Few More Hutong Bars Worth Their Mixology Salt
21:20 Author:Vincent R. VinciA few weeks ago, following the release of the Asia’s 50 Best Bars list, we set about putting together a list of bars in and around the hutongs of Gulou we felt were worth stopping by for a tipple or two. Now, we’re setting out to document some of the best cocktail bars across the capital – kicking things off once again in Gulou. This time we’re looking at a few more bars in the area, plus one or two that are in between as the series moves from Gulou and into the surrounding areas and beyond. Whatever the location may be, we think these spots are all well worth a visit, so drop by when you get the chance. B.A.r. Short for "Brand new Age", this is the former second location of now shuttered B.A., which shared a space with the also shuttered Fenzi Coffee near Andingmen. The new iteration has a larger space but keeps the attitude and drinks style championed by B.A. alive. That being said, the menu is more extensive here. B.A. did things on a flashcard-like menu, whereas B.A.r. breaks drinks into categories with a few varieties for each, like different martini variations and all…Original link

Peek into Beijing at This Beixinqiao Photography Exhibition
20:02 Author:Vincent R. VinciIn a big busy city like Beijing, it’s easy to get lost in our day to day – focus on our phones on our daily commute, tune out everyone and everything while we run through the motions. Sometimes, it’s nice to stop and take in the city we call home, perhaps even document what we see with a snapshot. This is the modus operandi of LS Lee, a British expat and photographer whose works are now on display at Aotu Space. An observer within a sometimes unpredictable city, Lee’s photographs work to find the little moments in Beijing. His current exhibition, titled Peking into Beijing, continues the themes Lee presented in previous exhibitions, focusing on intimate moments and the people of the city, with a twist this time around. “The color photographs are a kind of respite from the directness and intensity of the black-and-white images,” says the artist of the choice to include color photographs in this exhibition. Unlike the black-and-white photos, which depict people at an intimate level, the color photos depict still life and deliberately avoid showing people directly. In this way, the color photos act as a means of coming up to the surface for air…Original link
