Shanghai to host Danish film exhibition with 8 masterpieces

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of China-Denmark diplomatic ties, a Danish film exhibition will be held at the Shanghai Film Art Center from Feb 15 to 23, featuring eight acclaimed Danish films.

The exhibition highlights works by renowned Danish directors Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, both leading figures of the Dogma 95. This cinematic movement challenged industry conventions by emphasizing simplicity in storytelling and performances.

The eight featured films are:

The Element of Crime (1984): Lars von Trier’s first film follows a policeman entangled in a series of murders.

Epidemic (1987): Directed and written by Lars von Trier, this metafictional story follows a director and playwright writing a script about an epidemic, mirroring a real-life outbreak.

Europa (1991): A pacifist embarks on a journey that changes his worldview.

These three films collectively form Lars von Trier’s Europe Trilogy, which won two awards at the Cannes Film Festival.

Dogville (2003): Starring Nicole Kidman, this film portrays a stranger’s arrival in a small village, triggering unforeseen consequences. Directed and written by Lars von Trier.

Melancholia (2011): A sci-fi drama by Lars von Trier about a bride struggling with depression as a small planet hurtles toward Earth. Lead actress Kirsten Dunst won Best Actress at the 64th Cannes Film Festival.

Festen (1998): A Cannes award-winning film by Thomas Vinterberg, unveiling dark family secrets during a birthday dinner.

The Hunt (2013): Starring Mads Mikkelsen as a kindergarten teacher falsely accused of a horrendous crime, this Thomas Vinterberg film earned Mikkelsen the Best Actor award at the 65th Cannes Film Festival.

Another Round (2020): A dark comedy by Thomas Vinterberg about four teachers experimenting with alcohol consumption, leading to unexpected consequences.
