Shanghai topped the national box office during the 2025 Spring Festival holiday, with total ticket sales reaching 323 million yuan ($44.35 million) from Jan 28 to Feb 4, according to film data platform Maoyan.

Beijing and Chengdu followed, with box office revenues of 303 million yuan and 217 million yuan, respectively.

Nationwide, total box office revenue over the holiday reached a record high of 9.51 billion yuan, setting a new milestone for China’s film industry, according to the China Film Administration, which announced the figures on Feb 5.

The holiday also saw a surge in moviegoers, with 187 million people flocking to theaters, setting new records for both box office earnings and audience numbers.

The first day of the Chinese New Year witnessed all-time highs in both single-day box office revenue and theater attendance.

Leading the charts was the animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2, which grossed approximately 4.84 billion yuan.

Other top-grossing films included Detective Chinatown 1900, Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force, Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants, Boonie Bears: Future Reborn, and Operation Hadal, ranking second through sixth at the box office, according to Maoyan.
