Shanghai’s Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal saw a significant surge in activity during the recent Chinese New Year holiday, with 18 international cruise calls, marking a 350 percent year-on-year increase.

During the holiday period, the terminal handled a total of 65,560 passenger trips, representing remarkable growth of 307.9 percent compared to the previous year.

To ensure smooth and safe cruise operations during this busy period, the Baoshan Maritime Safety Administration implemented multiple measures to maintain cruise punctuality and safety. These efforts were particularly crucial given the winter fog and strong winds common in Shanghai’s port area.

In response to potential adverse weather conditions such as cold fronts, strong winds, and thick fog, the bureau worked closely with relevant authorities to analyze weather forecasts and develop strategies for the holiday period.

A key initiative was formulating customized plans for each international cruise, ensuring cruise punctuality and safety. This included strengthened communication, data sharing, and contingency plans for adverse weather.

Additionally, a monitoring system was put in place, combining maritime patrol vessels, drone surveillance, and remote monitoring, to ensure comprehensive coverage of the cruise terminal and surrounding waters.

The terminal is expected to host a record 206 cruise calls in 2025, setting a new benchmark for Shanghai’s cruise tourism industry.
