The Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg will stage two classic programs in Shanghai in November.
The Russian ballet troupe will perform Anna Karenina and Russian Hamlet, both choreographed by Boris Eifman, who is also founder and director of the company.
In his adaptation of Anna Karenina, Eifman sets aside the novel’s subplots to focus on the love triangle between the three main characters.
The heroine has the independent spirit of a modern woman, daring to love while constrained by the societal norms of her era.
Through dance, Eifman portrays a woman’s rebirth driven by the primal human instincts of love and passion — leading her to defy the shackles of her time, sacrifice maternal love and ultimately succumb to her desires.
Eifman is said to believe the emotions in the ballet transcend time and resonate with contemporary audiences.
Russian Hamlet tells the story of Tsar Paul I, one of the most enigmatic and contradictory figures in Russian history — who shares striking similarities with Hamlet as their lives are filled mysterious omens.
This tragic tale of power, deceit, betrayal and loneliness explores the eternal question — “To be, or not to be” — through emotionally charged choreography and imaginative theatrical scenes.
The two ballets will be performed from Nov 14 to 17 at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.
