The 2024 Shanghai International Art Book Fair opens at the Shanghai Tower.

The 2024 Shanghai International Art Book Fair, a highlight of the ongoing 6th Shanghai International Art Trade Week, opened on Friday at Shanghai Tower.

Running through Sunday, the fair celebrates the global influence of art publishing, with 60 leading publishers, museums, galleries, and academic institutions from six countries – China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, and Qatar.

Notable participants include global publishing giants such as ACC Art Books, Thames & Hudson, and Bloomsbury, the publisher behind the "Harry Potter" series.

The fair also features renowned institutions such as the Palace Museum, Qatar Museums, and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), alongside Shanghai's own art landmarks that include Museum of Art Pudong, Power Station of Art, and Yuz Museum.

Qatar Museums take part in this year's book fair.

In celebration of its 75th anniversary, Thames & Hudson is presenting a special booth featuring collaborative works with prestigious institutions like the British Museum, V&A, and MoMA. The publisher, known for its longstanding partnership with artist David Hockney, is also offering a special bookmark featuring Hockney's iconic glasses in recognition of his popularity in China.

Daniele Ronchi, Thames & Hudson's Asian general manager, emphasized the fair's significance as a platform for global art book professionals, noting it's more than just a gathering of publishers, saying it's a vital space for museums, galleries, and universities to come together.

"The scale of this year's fair has grown significantly, with more exhibitors from around the world," Ronchi said. "Also, the venue is great as it's in the heart of Shanghai and well connected to the other events of the art trade week. So, we expect a great crowd of both art and book lovers."

As part of its growing presence in China, Thames & Hudson recently launched a new book showcase at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, in addition to its Hong Kong office.

"We want to be closer to the Chinese market, to our local partners and to the readers," he said, adding that Thames & Hudson anticipates further collaborations with Chinese institutions to bring Chinese art to the world.

A discussion at the 9th Shanghai Dialogue Forum.

The 9th Shanghai Dialogue Forum also opened alongside the book fair.

This year's forum brought together industry leaders to discuss cultural trade, with a special focus on the 60th anniversary of China-France diplomatic relations. A dedicated session explored "mutual exchanges and learning" between Chinese and global cultures and the arts.

The forum also introduced several key art report, including the 2023 Report on Chinese Cultural Relics and Artworks Auctions, the 2024 Contemporary Art Market Report, and the 2024 Blue Book on the Cultural Industry of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone.

In recent years, Pudong has improved services in customs clearance, logistics, and exhibitions. This has helped establish Shanghai as a key "gateway" for international relics and artworks.

Since 2021, FTZ Art (Shanghai Free Trade Zone International Culture Investment and Development Co) has curated the cultural relics and artworks section at the China International Import Expo. This initiative has led to works by artists like Claude Monet, Marc Chagall, and Yayoi Kusama coming to the Chinese market.

From the fourth to sixth editions of the CIIE, 39 exhibitors participated in the section, resulting in the sale of 136 cultural relics and artworks with a total transaction value of 1.835 billion yuan (US$256.7 million).

  • Expats explore Hangzhou’s high-quality development and futuristic wonders

    00:00 Author:en.hangzhou.com.cn

Ten international friends from countries including Russia, the United Kingdom, India, Brazil, and Uganda gathered on Oct 31 in Xihu district, Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, to explore Hangzhou's impact on China's high-quality development.

Aboard a boat in Xixi National Wetland Park, the expats were captivated by the area's ecological beauty. Amid the guide's introduction, they eagerly took pictures of the charming landscape.

Visiting Hangzhou for the first time left a lasting impression on Joe Burns from Scotland. "I've been on a few boat journeys in China, but here it is different, with more varieties of fruits and plants. It's very green, much bigger, and the fact that it's in the middle of the city is very impressive," he said.

Subsequently, the group visited the Xixi Shuihu Culture Exhibition Hall within the park, delving into the deep connections between Shuihuzhuan, or Water Margin, and Hangzhou.

Harriet Sonia from Uganda admired the legendary stories of the Water Margin heroes. "The story depicts qualities of loyalty and tenacity that are celebrated in Chinese history. This experience gave me a greater appreciation for Chinese history and culture."

At the Wensan Digital Life Block, the international delegation visited the exhibition of the original manuscripts for Black Myth: Wukong and experienced the H-box digital twin technology.

The expats also had the opportunity to "visit" Notre Dame Cathedral at the M511 Complex. Using VR technology, they transcended time and space to witness Notre Dame's reconstruction and transformation throughout the ages, exploring nearly every corner of the iconic cathedral.

"It's incredible how technology can provide these unique experiences," marveled Thales Saque from Brazil. "It's as if we were there, exploring the environment, learning details that even visitors to Paris would not have access to. Hangzhou has been a great milestone for this high-quality development."

"Futuristic technologies are definitely here, and may more and more people have the opportunity to live these experiences," he added.

Hangzhou's Yunchuang International Community has become a hub of cultural exchange, attracting international talent with its unique blend of local culture and global engagement.

At the Yunchuang night school, Nguyen Thi Nhat Linh from Thailand recently expressed excitement about learning traditional Chinese culture through a hanfu and floral accessories class, part of a special series tailored to young international residents.

The night school offers courses in traditional Chinese art forms, such as Diancha tea art, Wuchang's martial arts, and local bamboo weaving, fostering cultural appreciation among foreign youth. In addition to classes, Yunchuang has created a supportive environment with a new international youth society, offering language learning, calligraphy, and more to help residents integrate and engage with the community.

Located near Alibaba's headquarters, Yunchuang houses over 100 foreign residents and 1,100 entrepreneurship and innovation professionals. The area's recent upgrades focus on building a globally inspired, livable space through robust infrastructure, convenient government services, and cultural activities, with facilities such as the new Qingcheng Innovation Center.

International resident Kawula, who recently moved to Yunchuang, noted how easy it has been to integrate, having attended tea ceremonies, joined Chinese language groups, and experienced the welcoming local culture.
