The Agogo, the world’s first FPSO vessel equipped with carbon capture and storage facilities, was delivered at Shanghai’s Changxing Island on March 3.
An FPSO vessel, which stands for “Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading”, is a vital asset in the offshore oil and gas industry, designed to produce, process, store, and offload oil and gas extracted from subsea wells, particularly in deepwater or remote locations where traditional pipelines are not feasible.
The Agogo vessel measures 333 meters in length and 60 meters in width. It features a daily output capacity of up to 120,000 barrels of crude oil and the ability to store 1.6 million barrels.
What sets the vessel apart is its environmentally-friendly design. Equipped with carbon capture and storage capabilities, the vessel can capture carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions generated during navigation and production activities.
Additionally, the Agogo can generate electricity by harnessing waste gas and heat, further reducing its environmental impact.
Traditionally, FPSO vessels are known to emit significant amounts of CO2 during crude oil production.
However, Agogo‘s innovative technology enables a reduction of CO2 emissions by an estimated 230,000 tons annually.
This reduction is equivalent to the CO2 absorption capacity of around 7,333 hectares of forests in a year, showcasing the vessel’s significant contribution to environmental conservation efforts.
The successful launch of the Agogo FPSO marks a significant milestone in the development of offshore carbon capture technology in China as well as a major step towards achieving zero carbon emissions in FPSO operations.
The vessel’s construction, completed in 24 months, also broke the world, shortening the previous record of 27 months, set by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Co Ltd.
