From the arts in Dongsi, we take a trip out east to Tongzhou and shift to grand waterways at…
The Beijing Grand Canal Museum (北京大运河博物馆 Běijīng Dà Yùnhé Bówùguǎn)
Having opened in December 2023, the Grand Canal Museum is one of Beijing’s newest museums, situated out in the Green Heart area of Tongzhou – aka the “city sub-center.” The museum consists of two large main buildings, each inspired by water-faring vessels, with the roof of the museum’s shared hall shaped like a boat and that of the main hall shaped like a sail.
Why Visit?
As the name suggests, the museum chronicles the history of the Grand Canal and Beijing from ancient times to the present day. Also included are rotating exhibitions as well as one relating to earthquake prevention and a bit on the development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
The Details
The Grand Canal Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 8pm (last entry at 7pm). Entry is free.
