The solid-state battery pilot production line at Future-Tech Innovation Institute.
On Feb. 17, the pilot production line for solid-state batteries at Future-Tech Innovation Institute in Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) was operating at full speed.
A group of young researchers from Professor Guo Xin’s team at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) conducted safety performance tests on a book-sized battery, diligently working to ensure the mass production of the first automotive-grade solid-state batteries.
“This is our independently developed solid-state battery sample, which boasts high safety, high energy density, fast charging capability, and cost-effectiveness,” explained Li Zhuo, a team member.
Solid-state batteries are hailed as the ultimate goal of next-generation power batteries. Their industrialization is expected to advance the development of new energy vehicles significantly. Professor Guo’s team has spent 26 years tackling the key technologies of solid-state lithium/sodium-ion batteries.
The institute was established in WEDZ in June 2022. Professor Guo’s solid-state lithium/sodium battery technology and industrialization project was one of the first to be incubated at the institute’s pilot base.
“The first automotive-grade solid-state battery will roll off the production line and commence vehicle verification in the second half of this year,” revealed Professor Guo. Guo’s company plans to expand its pilot production line and build a battery testing laboratory to establish a production line for automotive-grade power batteries.
Since its inception over two years ago, the institute has built 12 pilot production lines and incubated nine industrial companies. Two of these companies have valuations exceeding 100 million yuan ($13.77 million), seven have been selected as high-tech SMEs in Hubei province, and one has achieved “unicorn” status.
