Seed and pesticide maker Syngenta Group, a Europe-based subsidiary of Sinochem Holdings Corp Ltd, will cooperate with Shanghai’s Jinshan District Government to set up a global crop protection innovation center in the district, according to an agreement signed on Feb 17.
The center, which is expected to be put into operation by 2028, will advance the innovative research and development of novel compound formulations, biological preparations and soil health. It is set to provide vital support for technological innovation in agriculture both in China and abroad.
The agreement signed with Syngenta, one of the world’s leading agricultural technology companies, demonstrates Jinshan’s commitment to upgrading biopharmaceutical R&D and technology-powered agriculture.
Jeff Rowe, the chief executive officer of Syngenta Group, highlighted the move as a crucial step in enhancing local R&D and expanding its global innovation network. The center plans to form cooperative relationships with local research institutes and other industrial chain partners.
Jinshan, located along Shanghai’s border with Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, has been spearheading the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region given its central location, abundant natural resources and diverse ecological resources.
The Shanghai Bay Area High-tech Industrial Development Zone, where the new project is located, is driving the upgrading and transformation of the region’s industrial landscape.
A number of well-known enterprises plan to set up operations in the district in 2025, including Lexus, which is planning its first smart car R&D center in Jinshan.
