As Chinese New Year brought traditions and celebrations to Shanghai, a different kind of generosity took center stage in the cosmopolitan city.
From Jan 28 to Feb 4, 1,489 donors contributed 2,675 units of blood, according to the Shanghai Blood Administration Office.
The Rainbow Blood Donation Station, nestled in the heart of Hongkou district, led this wave of goodwill, welcoming its first donor, Chen Qi, on Jan 29, the very first day of the Chinese New Year.
Chen, a dedicated blood donor for years, skipped the traditional New Year’s Eve feast to maintain a diet suitable for blood donation. “I chose the first day as a symbolic gesture,” Chen said. “Even during the festive season, many patients still rely on blood donations for treatment.”
Also stepping up was Gao Yi, a junior at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
While out for a stroll and planning to watch a movie, she happened to pass by the donation site. Inspired, she decided to make a meaningful contribution.
“I started donating as a freshman, but this time, it feels even more special because of the occasion. I wish everyone a happy and peaceful New Year,” she shared.
The spirit of giving extended beyond individuals. Two deliverymen made their first-ever blood donations during the Spring Festival, while more than 40 volunteers from Ningbo, Zhejiang province traveled 230 kilometers to the Shanghai Blood Center on Jan 30 to contribute to this life-saving cause.
