Shanghai Customs has launched China’s first intelligent health quarantine monitoring system at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport to bolster border control efficiency amid a surge in international passenger traffic.
The initiative comes as Shanghai’s airports have seen a 44.96-percent year-on-year increase in inbound and outbound passenger traffic, reaching a total of 2.68 million passengers as of Jan 24, 2025, driven by the approaching Spring Festival holiday and relaxed visa policies.
The new system, operational since Nov 19, 2024, leverages a network of smart devices and intelligent gates to proactively identify and manage potential health risks, ensuring what Shanghai Customs terms a “seamless, intelligent, and non-intrusive” experience for passengers.
In the two months since its launch, the “multi-point monitoring and intelligent gates” model has already identified over 200 travelers with fever or related symptoms.
“Under this new model, officers only need to provide guidance, minimizing intervention and ensuring both effective control and efficient flow,” explained Wang Congyun, an official at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport Customs.
Passengers passing through the intelligent gates are guided by color-coded signals – red, purple, blue, or green – streamlining the identification and processing of various types of travelers.
This technology is particularly timely given the ongoing Spring Festival travel rush, with Hongqiao Airport handling over 9,000 inbound and outbound passengers daily, a 13.7-percent increase over the previous year.
“We are committed to continuously exploring innovative solutions to enhance both health security and passenger convenience at our border checkpoints, safeguarding the health of residents and the safety of Shanghai,” said Gu Huijun, deputy director of Shanghai Hongqiao Airport Customs.
