Shanghai unveiled a series of consumption promotion events on Jan 22 as part of the initiative launched by the Ministry of Commerce to celebrate the upcoming Spring Festival, which was inscribed by the UNESCO on intangible cultural heritage list, according to official sources.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed Spring Festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of the traditional new year, on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity earlier in December 2024.

By combining traditional cultural elements, integrating online and offline activities as well as building domestic and international collaboration, a total of 20 consumption promotion activities will be launched, which will be themed as “Chinese New Year Travel”, “New Year Goods Going Abroad,” and “Silk Road New Year Goods Shopping”, according to the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce.

By organizing leading e-commerce platforms, live streaming e-commerce bases, brands and enterprises together, up to 10,000 categories of products related to the Silk Road will be rolled out during the activities, allowing consumers to get access to a wide range of overseas products, enjoy the high-quality goods from Silk Road countries.

Thanks to the implementation of visa-free policies, cultural tourism routes have been designed for overseas travelers during the Spring Festival, and a number of tailored measures such as convenient payment, luggage storage, and multilingual menus are in place to welcome these inbound tourists.

Between 200 and 300 selected products would be launched at the top Chinese e-commerce platforms’ overseas section targeting consumers in Southeast Asian countries and nearly 20 countries that have designated the Spring Festival as an official holiday.

Major activities of the Silk Road e-commerce consumption promotion event, formerly known as Silk Road E-commerce Carnival for Spring Festival

1. Chinese New Year products Festival at Super Brand Mall

The themed activity at the Super Brand Mall will launch exquisite snacks, cosmetics, coffee, and many Southeast Asian products.

2. Free inbound trip offered by Trip.com

Online travel agency Trip.com will offer free half-day inbound trip integrated with characteristics of the Spring Festival during the Silk Road e-commerce consumption event period, allowing travelers to have a panoramic view of Shanghai, a city known for its mixture of local culture and modern style.

3. Global products available at Taobao

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd’s online marketplace Taobao will put up a special section for Chinese products with the Spring Festival elements on its global website.

4. Spring Festival food list by Dingdong

Chinese online grocery platform Dingdong has launched more than 100 kinds of delicacies from over 10 countries at its select platform, along with a ranking of best-selling Chinese New Year products.

5. Online Chinese New Year products festival by the Hongqiao Import Commodity Exhibition and Trading Center

More than 700 products with up to 50 percent discount are available at the online Chinese New Year products festival by the Hongqiao Import Commodity Exhibition and Trading Center, a 365-day trading platform in Shanghai for the China International Import Expo. Among which, nearly 400 of them are special products from 17 countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.

6. Pakistan pavilion at the Global Hub

An event celebrating the Spring Festival with jewelry and handicraft from Pakistan will be launched via platforms, such as Chinese social media platform Douyin, by the Pakistan pavilion at the Global Hub of the Waigaoqiao Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone.

7. Year-end carnival by Greenland Global Commodity Trading Hub

A series of activities will be launched by Greenland Global Commodity Trading Hub together with the national pavilions in the hub, creating a one-stop shopping venue by offering more than 5,000 products from over 30 countries worldwide.

8. Chinese New Year products market by Benlai

An online Chinese New Year products market was launched by fresh food e-commerce platform Benlai, offering high-quality products from Silk Road countries including Italy, Spain, and Malaysia.
