Shanghai has expanded investment in its major construction projects, spending a record-breaking 238.3 billion yuan ($32.53 billion) in 2024, surpassing the planned amount.

According to a person in charge of the city’s key infrastructure projects, 21 new projects were initiated and 35 completed last year. The projects mainly involve metro and railways, municipal roads, and bridges, as well as water infrastructure.

A number of construction projects including the Shanghai-Suzhou-Huzhou high-speed railway, Shanghai Airport Link Line, and Yindu Road cross-river tunnel had been completed by Dec 2024, greatly increasing convenience for the public.

Meanwhile, Shanghai is speeding up work on construction projects in the technology sector, in line with the national strategy. The newly built Huawei’s Lianqiu Lake Research Center in Shanghai’s Qingpu district is one example. It is the technology giant’s biggest and most advanced R&D Center globally.

Major strides have been made on projects improving the livelihood of citizens. They are exemplified by the re-opening of Shanghai Expo Culture Park, which houses the Twin Hills and the Greenhouse Garden. It has become a new landmark for entertainment. Other ongoing projects include the Shanghai Industrial Museum and Shanghai Grand Opera House.
