Young math enthusiasts from kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools around the world celebrated their victories during the 2024 World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) Final Round awards ceremony, which was held at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) in Longgang District on Sunday night.
WIMO, a unique international mathematics competition founded by experienced International Mathematical Olympiad coaches, targets the top 1% of elite math students and covers topics like logical thinking, arithmetic, algebra, number theory, geometry, and combinatorics.
The final round gathered 201 participants from nine countries and regions like Vietnam, China’s Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, and Myanmar.
During the awards ceremony, Zhu Shiping, vice president of CUHK-Shenzhen, congratulated the participants and their parents. Zhu also highlighted the university’s dedication to internationalization.
Ma. Cassandra Reich Duque, a student at Sarrat National High School in the Philippines, won the All World Champions title in the senior secondary group. “I am very excited because I have attended the competition three times, but this is my first time becoming a winner,” said Duque.
Owen Raphael Wijaya, an eighth-grade student at Sekolah Pilar Indonesia, said he was excited by the challenging problems and the connections he made with people from around the world. “The greatest point is that I can enjoy math and learn more, improve my skills, and gain new experiences,” said Wijaya.
Many participants, visiting Shenzhen and China for the first time, were impressed by the city. “Shenzhen is so beautiful and developed. It is more technological than my country,” said Duque. She also said CUHK-Shenzhen’s campus was the best she had ever seen and expressed an interest in studying there in the future.
