Shanghai’s Yangshan Port welcomed its 10,000th international voyage vessel on Dec 26, marking the first time the annual count has surpassed 10,000.

According to statistics from the Yangshan Immigration Inspection, the previous peak in inbound and outbound vessels at Yangshan Port occurred in 2012, when nearly 9,760 vessels were recorded. At that time, the port’s annual container throughput was 14.15 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), and most of the ships berthing were medium and small-sized vessels.

This year, most arriving ships are ultra-large container vessels. These larger ships, with higher capacities, have contributed significantly to Shanghai Port’s annual container throughput, which has now exceeded 50 million TEUs.

According to data released by the Shanghai International Port (Group) Co Ltd, Yangshan Port accounts for 50.5 percent of the 50 million TEUs of container throughput at Shanghai Port this year.

Looking ahead, with the completion of the comprehensive development project of the area north of Xiaoyangshan Island, both container throughput and vessel berthing at Yangshan Port are expected to continue to grow steadily.
