New train schedule to go into effect next month

A new train schedule will take effect on Jan 5, 2025, introducing additional passenger and freight services, according to China State Railway Group.

Following the update, the national railway system will operate 13,028 passenger trains and 22,859 freight trains.

In the Yangtze River Delta region, the new schedule will see historic highs with the operation of 1,391.5 pairs of passenger trains and 1,351 pairs of freight trains.

Railway authorities have planned to fully utilize the capacity of new lines, such as the Shanghai-Suzhou-Huzhou, Hangzhou-Wenzhou, and Xuancheng-Jixi rail lines, to boost the integration of the Yangtze River Delta region.

Additional trains will also link Shanghai to key cities like Zhengzhou, Wuhan, and Shenzhen.

Improved loop train services are set to be offered in the Yangtze River Delta region. The G8387/90/87 “Super Loop” high-speed rail service, from the Shanghainan Railway Station to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, will operate in both directions.

A new pair of loop trains, G8981/4/1 and G8982/3/2, will connect Huzhou, Wuhu, Nanjing, Suzhou, and Shanghai with a travel time of about five hours.

To enhance the commuting experience during the early morning rush hour, commuter train services in the Yangtze River Delta region will be expanded. A new intercity train, C3044, will depart from Shanghai Songjiang Railway Station at 6:53 am and arrive at Shanghainan Railway Station at 7:08 am.

For the Spring Festival travel rush, 38 new pairs of passenger trains will depart from the Yangtze River Delta region to Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Shanxi province, Gansu province, and other areas.

In terms of freight services, the railway system will operate 22,859 freight trains. The Yangtze River Delta region will operate 1,351 pairs of freight trains, setting a new record.

Ticket sales for the new schedule began on Dec 22. Travelers can access more railway information via China’s official railway ticket-booking website 12306.cn and the online platform for railway freight 95306.cn.
