Shanghai released a list of 25 star-rated art museums on Dec 23 during the Shanghai Art Museum Development Theme Day.

These museums, selected after rigorous evaluations conducted across the city’s art scene, are poised to set new standards in the industry and offer unparalleled experiences for art enthusiasts, led by the national key art museum — China Art Museum (Shanghai).

With a total of 100 art museums dotting the city’s landscape, the evaluation process took over a year to complete. Factors such as facility infrastructure, collection curation, exhibition design, educational outreach, and technological advancements were considered to identify the 25 museums worthy of the new star ratings.

In recent years, visiting art museums in Shanghai has become a cultural ritual for both residents and tourists alike. By the end of 2023, Shanghai boasted a record number of 100 art museums, leading the nation in quantity and quality. These museums have not only showcased their diverse collections, but also crafted unique identities, hosted high-caliber exhibitions, and attracted a staggering 7.81 million visitors during the first 11 months of this year, marking a remarkable 169.3 percent increase year-on-year.

Established in 2020 under the guidance of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, the Shanghai Art Museum Association, has been instrumental in modernizing the operations and management of art museums across the city. Their efforts culminated in the unveiling of the “Shanghai Art Museum Service Standards” on the same day as the star-rated museums list was released.

Zhang Yue, vice president of the association, introduced the core principles of the rising standards and urged all art museums in the city to adhere to them. This initiative aims to elevate the quality of public cultural services provided by art museums, fostering a more enriching and engaging experience for visitors.

The introduction of these standards follows the launch of the “Regulations on the Management of Art Museums in Shanghai” in April 2023, marking the country’s first provincial and municipal government regulation in the realm of art museums. These progressive measures are geared towards advancing the standardization, professionalism, and global reach of the art museum sector in Shanghai.
