An eco-friendly, intelligent shipping route connecting Suzhou Port in East China’s Jiangsu province to East Shanghai’s Waigaoqiao Port was inaugurated on Dec 2, during the opening ceremony of Pudong Shipping Week 2024.

Spanning nearly 200 kilometers in the core region of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the route is designed to support the operation of electric-powered container ships capable of carrying 120 TEU or twenty-foot equivalent unit standard containers.

The route not only links Shanghai with its neighboring city of Suzhou, but also offers significant environmental benefits. Each round trip by a single vessel is expected to slash carbon dioxide emissions by 6.37 tons, delivering an annual reduction of over 400 tons.

Zhang Xin, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Transport, emphasized the achievements stemming from years of effort in establishing the Shanghai International Shipping Center.

In 2023, Shanghai Port handled record-breaking container throughput of 49.16 million TEUs, securing its position as the world’s busiest port for the 14th consecutive year.

The city has also become a hub for the global maritime industry, attracting the world’s top 10 liner companies, 10 members of the International Association of Classification Societies and key organizations such as the Baltic and International Maritime Council and the International Chamber of Shipping.
