Construction of the Shanghai Industrial Museum began on Nov 30, which is envisioned to become a premier institution showcasing the industrial heritage of Shanghai and China as a whole.
Covering an area of 31,800 square meters, the museum will be located on the historic site of the Jiangnan General Manufacturing Bureau that was established in 1865. The bureau was among the earliest industrial enterprises in China and is known as “the first factory of China”.

The museum aims to reconstruct the history of the bureau, offering visitors an immersive experience of industrial production processes and highlighting how industrial innovations have shaped and enriched daily life.
It will boast a collection of artifacts, models and historical documents that chronicle China’s industrial journey.
Key exhibits will include the country’s first domestically developed incandescent light bulb, its first Yongjiu (Forever) bicycle, and a Hongdeng (Red Lantern) radio from the 1970s.
