Shanghai-based Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co Ltd, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, has recently launched the world’s largest liquefied natural gas dual-fuel powered container ship.
Independently developed, designed, and constructed by the company, the vessel was launched 10 days ahead of schedule on Nov 20 from the No 1 dock at its Changxing Island West Yard.
As the world’s first 24,000 twenty-equivalent-unit dual-fuel-powered container ship, it is the first of four such vessels that have been ordered by the French CMA CGM Group.
Measuring 399 meters in length, the ship boasts a carrying capacity of 220,000 tons. It can accommodate up to 23,872 containers, and transport 2,200 standard refrigerated containers. This makes it a standout addition to China’s fleet of “maritime green giants” and “super cargo carriers”.
Powered by liquefied natural gas, this new-generation vessel significantly reduces its carbon footprint, emitting approximately 20 percent less carbon dioxide compared to traditional fuel-powered container ships of the same class.
The ship is scheduled for completion and delivery in the second quarter of 2025.
