Hangzhou Metro is set to roll out approximately 130 driverless trains over the next five years, ushering in a new era of autonomous metro travel in the city. This ambitious move aligns with the recently unveiled Hangzhou Metro Green Urban Rail Development Action Plan and Hangzhou Metro Smart Urban Rail Development Plan by Hangzhou Metro Group.
The plans underscore several innovative strategies for the city’s future transit system. Within the next five years, Hangzhou Metro will integrate photovoltaic power with the regional grid at metro depots and adopt energy-saving technologies in areas such as train traction, braking, and substation systems.
Additionally, 80 stations under Phase IV of the metro project will be upgraded to “smart stations”, and around 130 reliable driverless trains will be deployed on new lines. Hangzhou is committed to establishing an advanced urban rail system that is efficient, convenient, safe, green, and economically viable, in line with China’s smart city goals.
In the coming years, Hangzhou Metro’s new routes will begin operations with fully automated trains requiring no driver intervention under normal conditions.
