Shanghai Port has achieved a record-high container throughput of 39.1 million twenty-foot equivalent units with a year-on-year increase of 8 percent, according to a news conference held by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government on Oct 15 to address the upcoming North Bund Forum.
The forum, taking place from Oct 22 to 24, will gather global shipping industry leaders to explore building a digital, smart, and green ecosystem.
According to the news conference, the first phase of the Luojing Container Port Area has already commenced operation, featuring one 100,000-ton berth and four 10,000-ton berths. The port is designed with an annual throughput capacity of 2.6 million TEUs, making it a crucial hub connecting river and sea transport. This development significantly enhances the efficiency and capacity of Shanghai Port.
In the first 9 months, Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport handled 602,000 flights, transporting 93.43 million passengers and 3.07 million metric tons of cargo. Airport operations in these categories have returned to 2019 levels, reflected by year-on-year increases of 17.8, 33.5, and 12 percent, respectively.
International cruise routes have also resumed. During the first quarter of 2024, the first domestically designed and produced cruise ship, Adora Magic City, was launched, serving over 250,000 passenger trips. Shanghai Port welcomed the berthing of 175 international cruise ships with a passenger throughput of 1.05 million, about 70 percent of 2019 levels. The second domestically-made large cruise ship is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026.
Shanghai will focus on the digital, smart, and green transformation of the shipping industry. This vision includes establishing smart ports and airports.
By 2030, the city aims to form an intelligent port cluster and a smart aviation hub that integrates land and air transportation and is characterized by streamlined travel with a unified identity verification system, logistics management, customs inspections, operational networks, and regulatory platforms.
