The Regulations on the Supply of Medicines and Medical Devices for International Navigating Vessels in Pudong New Area will officially take effect on Oct 15. This marks China’s first local regulation regarding the supply of medicines and medical devices for international cargo ships, aimed at enhancing the global allocation capability of shipping resources.
The long duration of international voyages and frequent extreme weather conditions pose threats to the safety of crew members. Major ports around the world generally offer medical supply services. However, due to the previous regulatory policy vacuum, marine supply service companies in China were unable to provide medical supplies to international navigating vessels in a standardized manner, leading to a loss of market share to foreign ports.
The new regulations pioneer a medical supply model for international ships that forms a closed-loop supply process involving pharmaceutical enterprises, marine supply service companies, and shipping companies.
Following the implementation of the regulations, Pudong New Area will lead the way in establishing an online information management platform in collaboration with customs, maritime, drug supervision, shipping, and other departments, ensuring full traceability of medicines and medical devices.
Aligned with a more comprehensive and global supply chain system, the regulations will enhance the soft power of the city’s international shipping center.
To ensure the orderly implementation of the regulation, Pudong New Area has compiled the Marine Supply Medicines and Medical Devices Catalog (2024 Edition), listing 209 items across 10 categories. The catalog will be updated and adjusted as necessary in the future.
