Highway charging stations in Shanghai experienced a record-breaking surge in demand during China’s National Day holiday from Oct 1 to 7. The State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company reported 20,906 charging sessions during the holiday week, a significant 45.64 percent increase from the previous year. This surge resulted in a total charging volume of 399,300 kilowatt-hours, marking a 51.34 percent year-on-year increase.
This trend was mirrored nationwide, with 24,400 highway charging stations recording 3.1 million charging sessions and consuming 72.15 million kilowatt-hours of electricity throughout the holiday week, according to the National Energy Administration. The daily average charging volume reached 10.3 million kwh, representing a 2.4-fold increase compared to regular weekdays and a substantial rise compared to previous holidays.
To accommodate this heightened demand, power companies across China implemented various measures. State Grid Shanghai, for instance, conducted pre-holiday inspections and maintenance on 61 key charging stations. During peak periods, the company deployed an intelligent management system to dispatch emergency charging vehicles, robots, and tidal charging piles to high-demand areas.
Notably, intelligent mobile charging robots were deployed for the first time at several Shanghai highway service areas, offering a rapid charging solution and mitigating congestion. With the ongoing expansion and optimization of charging infrastructure, industry experts predict that “range anxiety” among EV drivers on highways will gradually dissipate in the coming years.
