Survey reveals high utilization of senior care services among elderly in Shanghai

A recent report unveiled by the Customer Evaluation Center, affiliated with the Shanghai Association for Quality, sheds light on the extensive utilization of community senior care services among seniors aged over 60 residing in Shanghai. The report, based on 2,207 surveys conducted among seniors and their cohabitants across the city’s 16 districts, offers valuable insights into the landscape of elderly care services in Shanghai.

The survey findings indicate that 97.7 percent of respondents have availed themselves of community senior care services to varying degrees. Among the array of services extended to seniors, family doctor services emerged as the most favored, with 62.4 percent of respondents expressing their appreciation for this essential healthcare provision. Notably, statistics reveal that family doctors in Shanghai have entered into contracts with a cumulative total of over 11 million individuals.

The report further highlights the impressive level of awareness regarding community senior care services among respondents, with 99.5 percent demonstrating familiarity with available offerings. Canteens catering to the elderly emerged as the most widely recognized service. Amidst the survey’s detailed findings, it was revealed that a substantial number of elderly-friendly dining establishments, including 346 dedicated canteens for the elderly, are readily accessible within a 15-minute walk for over 60 percent of seniors. While community canteens emerged as the most easily reachable facilities, a notable 48.8 percent of respondents identified areas for potential improvement in the existing care infrastructure.

The report also underscores the challenges faced by families with elderly members requiring specialized care, with approximately 7.8 percent of households grappling with dementia or disability-related care needs. While around 60 percent of such families have sought at-home care services, 14.7 percent expressed uncertainty regarding the application process.

Moreover, the survey delineates a nuanced landscape of at-home care services, revealing gaps in awareness regarding emergency, defecation, and concierge services among respondents. Calls for expanded senior-friendly facilities and additional senior care institutions were also voiced by some respondents.

The report’s nuanced analysis further delineates regional variations in care service preferences, with elderly care centers resonating most strongly in central areas, while rural locales prioritize entertainment, sports events, and family doctor services.
