Zimbabwe eyes collaboration with Shenzhen on wetlands

Sithembiso Nyoni (R), Zimbabwe’s minister of environment, climate, and wildlife, pays a visit to Shenzhen.

Sithembiso Nyoni, Zimbabwe’s minister of environment, climate, and wildlife, said during a visit to Shenzhen that Zimbabwe is looking forward to cooperating with Shenzhen in green infrastructure, wetlands conservation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development.

Shenzhen Deputy Mayor Dai Jintao met with Nyoni this morning. Dai expressed Shenzhen’s eagerness to collaborate with Zimbabwe in fostering green development initiatives.

Boasting cutting-edge technology and extensive expertise in new energy, energy conservation, and environmental protection, Shenzhen is ready to impart its technological acumen to Zimbabwe to facilitate Zimbabwe’s transition to a green economy and support its sustainable development goals, according to Dai.

“We encourage Shenzhen enterprises to invest and develop in Zimbabwe and participate in the building of green infrastructure in Zimbabwe,” Dai said.

He also emphasized the potential for both sides to explore and capitalize on mutually advantageous business prospects, harnessing the strengths of their complementary economies.

The 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP15) is set to take place from July 23 to 31 this year in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Dai stated that Shenzhen will lend it full support to the event’s preparations and organize a delegation to participate.

Furthermore, Shenzhen is excited about the prospect of Zimbabwe becoming a member state of the International Mangrove Center. Dai expressed hope for reinforcing personnel exchanges and capacity building with Zimbabwe in the domain of ecological governance.

Nyoni said the tour in Shenzhen, including the visit to the Futian Mangrove Ecological Park, was impressive. “It was very impressive to see how the city is planned and how organized and technologically advanced the city is.”

Nyoni particularly praised Shenzhen’s speed and efficiency in promoting the establishment of the world’s first International Mangrove Center in Shenzhen, a city where over 100,000 migratory birds make a stop each winter.

“We anticipate the signing of a cooperation agreement with the International Mangrove Center. This will bolster our personnel exchanges and further enhance the collaborative efforts between the two nations,” Nyoni said.

Nyoni mentioned that her current visit, and the Zimbabwean president’s visit to the city last year, underscore the importance Zimbabwe has attached to its relationship with Shenzhen.

Zimbabwean president Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa led a delegation to visit Shenzhen last September. While showing keen interest in BYD’s diverse range of new energy vehicles, Mnangagwa was enthusiastic about learning from Shenzhen’s expertise in smart city development and anticipates future opportunities for collaboration.
