The world’s first floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel equipped with a carbon capture and storage facility has been completed in Shanghai’s Changxing Island.

This 333-meter-long and 60-meter-wide vessel is scheduled to enter production this year, with a daily crude oil production capacity of 120,000 barrels and a storage capacity of 1.6 million barrels.

What sets this vessel apart is its ability to capture the carbon dioxide generated by the onboard gas turbine, as well as utilize waste heat from exhaust gases for power generation.

The vessel is estimated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 230,000 metric tons per year, equivalent to the absorption capacity of 110,000 mu (7,333 hectares) of forests in a year.

Changxing Island is located in Chongming district, adjacent to Hengsha Island in the east and Chongming Island in the north.

Construction of the vessel advanced Changxing Island’s goal of a “world-class marine equipment island”.
