The passenger throughput of Wuhan Tianhe International Airport is expected to reach 3.76 million, up 14.6 percent year on year, during China’s Spring Festival travel rush, which kicked off Tuesday.
The travel rush, also known as “Chunyun,” is usually a period of high transportation demand as people return home for family reunions. The 2025 Chunyun will last from Jan. 14 to Feb. 22.
During the period, about 27,000 flights are expected to be carried out during the period, with a year-on year increase of 13.4 percent. The airport is expected to see an average of 680 flights and an average passenger throughput of about 95,000 per day.
The Spring Festival is increasingly becoming a time for travel and leisure for many Chinese citizens. Ticketing data indicates a sharp rise in demand for northern “ice-and-snow” destinations like Harbin and Changchun, as well as warm southern cities such as Haikou and Sanya.
