Brief introduction of Xiamen University

Xiamen University, founded by the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Chen Jiageng陈嘉庚 in 1921, is the first university founded by overseas Chinese in China’s modern educational history.

On July 1, 1937, at the request of Chen Jiageng, the national government in Nanjing agreed to change the private Xiamen University to a national university.

In 1951, the former provincial Fujian Agricultural College福建农学院 was merged into Xiamen University and changed into the Agricultural College of Xiamen University厦门大学农学院. The political, legal, and economic departments of the former private Fujian University were merged into Xiamen University.

In July 958, Xiamen University was released to Fujian Province. In September 1963, with the approval of the central government, Xiamen University was changed into a national key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of education.

Since its establishment, adhering to the motto of “self-improvement and perfection”, the school has accumulated running experience and formed distinctive school characteristics. It has become a comprehensive university with complete disciplines, outstanding teachers, ranking the position of first-class in China, and having extensive influence in the world.

Xiamen University is the first university in China to build an independent campus overseas. Its early buildings have been selected into the national key cultural relics protection units and the list of “the first batch of China’s 20th-century architectural heritage”. It is known as “the strongest university in the South” and “the most beautiful university in China”.

The university has more than 200 research institutions, including 2 national collaborative innovation centers (leading units), 4 national key laboratories, 1 national engineering technology research center, 1 national engineering laboratory, 2 national local joint engineering research centers, 3 national local joint engineering laboratories, 1 National Research Institute and 1 national industry education integration innovation platform.

As of 2021, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked Xiamen University 96th in Asia and 20th in China with its teaching and research performance.

Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the “Shanghai Ranking”, placed Xiamen University 20th in China.
